AI design tools compared: product design, graphics, generative imagery, prototyping and user research
Design was one of the first creative fields where AI changed daily work, starting with Photoshop's Generative Fill in 2023. Three years later, nearly every design tool has AI built in, and the differences between them come down to two things: which part of the design process the AI handles, and how many credits you get before it stops.
This guide sorts the six tools in this category by the job they do, compares their October 2026 prices and AI allowances, and covers the rights and quality questions that come with generated design work.
Five kinds of AI design tool
| Group | What the AI does | Tools in this directory | How AI is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product design platforms | Prototypes from prompts, edits to files, image tools | Figma AI | Monthly credits per seat |
| Template graphics | Layouts, images and copy inside brand kits | Canva Magic Design | Monthly allowance by plan |
| Generative imagery | Images, vectors, video and audio inside pro apps | Adobe Firefly | Monthly generative credits |
| Sites and quick prototypes | Websites, wireframes and app screens from text | Framer AI, Uizard | Credits or generation counts |
| User research | Builds studies, tests prototypes, summarizes results | Maze AI | Enterprise quote |
Product design platforms
Figma is where most product teams design interfaces, and its AI features work on the same files, components and libraries. Figma Make, launched at Config in May 2025 and generally available since July 2025, turns a prompt or an existing design into a working prototype or web app, and it can connect to a Supabase backend. The Figma agent edits designs from chat on the canvas. Smaller AI tools rename layers, search assets, remove backgrounds, expand images and generate images using models such as ChatGPT Images 2.0 and Google's Nano Banana. Dev Mode includes an MCP server that gives coding agents design context.
Every seat includes AI credits that reset monthly and cannot be shared:
| Figma plan | Full seat price | Full seat AI credits | Dev or Collab seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | 500 a month, 150 a day | Not applicable |
| Professional | $16 a month | 3,000 | $12 or $3, 500 credits |
| Organization | $55 a month, billed yearly | 3,500 | $25 or $5, 500 credits |
| Enterprise | $90 a month, billed yearly | 4,250 | $35 or $5, 500 credits |
Credit costs vary widely. Figma's help center lists 1 to 5 credits to remove a background, 2 to 16 to generate an image depending on the model, and, for Figma Make, about 30 credits to change a font and 100 or more to build an app from scratch. Figma began enforcing Full seat limits on March 18, 2026. Teams that run out can buy a shared monthly credit subscription or turn on pay-as-you-go billing up to a spending cap.
Template graphics
Canva Magic Design generates design options from a short brief or an uploaded image, then lets you edit them as normal Canva designs. It sits inside Magic Studio with Canva AI, Magic Write for copy, Magic Media for images and video, Magic Layers for turning flat images into editable layers, and Magic Switch for resizing and translating a design into other formats. Brand Kits keep fonts, colors and logos consistent across generated work.
Canva Pro costs $180 a year for one person and Business $250 a year per person. Each plan has a monthly AI allowance shared across Standard, Premium and Ultra tools, with Free capped at 200 Standard or 20 Premium uses. Canva suits marketing and social teams more than product designers; see our marketing guide for how its AI allowance compares with marketing platforms.
Generative imagery
Adobe Firefly is both a standalone web and mobile app and the engine behind AI features in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom and Adobe Express. Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Photoshop, Text to Vector Graphic in Illustrator and Generative Extend in Premiere all run on it. Firefly Boards is a moodboard workspace for exploring ideas with several models at once.
Adobe now offers partner models next to its own: Google's Gemini image models and Veo 3.1, OpenAI's GPT Image models, Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2, Runway Gen-4.5, Luma Ray3, Kling, Topaz upscalers and ElevenLabs speech, among others. Partner models count as premium features and use credits.
| Firefly plan | US price | Premium credits a month | Extra apps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | Firefly only |
| Standard | $9.99 a month | 2,000 | Firefly only |
| Pro | $19.99 a month | 4,000 | Express Premium, Photoshop web and mobile |
| Pro Plus | $49.99 a month | 10,000 | Same as Pro |
| Premium | $199.99 a month | 50,000 plus unlimited Firefly Video Model | Same as Pro |
Paid plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations, such as Generative Fill in Photoshop. Creative Cloud Pro, $69.99 a month since Adobe's May 2025 price change, also includes 4,000 premium credits, so most Creative Cloud subscribers do not need a separate Firefly plan. Adobe regularly runs promotions with unlimited generations on selected models for a year, valid only in the Firefly web and mobile apps.
Sites and quick prototypes
Framer is a website builder used by designers and marketing teams. Its AI generates page layouts from a prompt, translates sites into other languages, and runs agents that edit pages and CMS content. AI features use workspace credits:
- Free: 500 credits to try, with a Framer domain.
- Basic: $10 a month billed yearly, 1,000 credits a month, custom domain.
- Pro: $30 a month billed yearly, 3,000 credits a month, staging and branching.
- Enterprise: custom limits, SSO and SCIM.
Extra editors cost $20 a month each, and AI translation costs $20 per locale. Framer publishes the sites it builds, so the output goes live without a developer, which is its main difference from Figma Make.
Uizard turns text prompts, screenshots and hand-drawn sketches into editable wireframes and app screens using its Autodesigner model, and generates heatmaps that predict where users will look. Miro bought Uizard in May 2024, and Uizard still sells its own plans. Free allows two projects and three AI generations a month. Pro costs $12 a month billed yearly with 500 generations, and Business $39 a month billed yearly with 5,000 and a custom brand kit. Uizard suits founders and product managers who need mockups to test an idea, while professional designers usually stay in Figma.
User research
Maze tests prototypes and live products with real users. Teams run unmoderated usability tests on Figma prototypes, card sorts, tree tests, surveys and interviews, and recruit from Maze's panel, which Maze says has more than 5 million participants. Its AI builds study plans from your goals, runs AI-moderated interviews that ask follow-up questions, and summarizes results into reports.
Maze simplified its pricing in 2026 and removed its $99 a month Starter plan. In October 2026 its pricing page lists a Free plan, with one active study a month and limits on projects and responses, and Enterprise by quote. Maze's help center says AI-moderated studies are only available on Enterprise. Panel recruitment is billed separately in credits at about $5 each.
Rights and quality checks for AI design work
- Model training and indemnity. Adobe trains its own Firefly models on licensed and public domain content and offers indemnity to eligible enterprise customers. That protection does not extend to partner models. Check the terms for any model before using its output in paid work.
- Copyright. The US Copyright Office's 2025 report on AI and copyrightability says purely AI-generated material cannot be registered, while human selection, arrangement and edits can be. Keep your working files to show what you changed.
- Accessibility. Generated layouts often miss contrast ratios, focus order and alt text. Run checks against WCAG before shipping.
- Design systems. Prompt-to-app tools produce generic interfaces unless you give them your components and rules. Figma Make can import a library for this reason.
How to choose
- Product teams: start with Figma's included credits and measure monthly use before buying more.
- Marketing and social: Canva for volume and brand control, Firefly for image quality and editing in Photoshop.
- Marketing sites: Framer, if you want to publish without a developer.
- Early mockups: Uizard or Figma Make for idea testing, then rebuild in your design system.
- Testing: Maze's free plan for small unmoderated tests, with a quote for AI moderation at scale.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI tool for designers?
For product and UI design, Figma is the default because its AI features, Figma Make and the Figma agent, work on your existing files, components and design system. For marketing graphics and social content, Canva is faster because AI generation sits next to templates and brand kits. For photo editing and illustration, Adobe Firefly's tools inside Photoshop and Illustrator are the most mature, and Firefly now includes partner models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs and Runway. For publishing a site from a prompt, Framer is the strongest option. Most teams combine two of these.
How do Figma AI credits work?
Every Figma seat includes AI credits that reset monthly and do not roll over. Full seats get 500 a month on Starter, 3,000 on Professional, 3,500 on Organization and 4,250 on Enterprise; Dev and Collab seats get 500. Simple actions cost a few credits, such as 1 to 5 to remove a background. Agentic features vary: Figma's own examples put a font change in Figma Make at about 30 credits and generating an app from scratch at 100 or more. Figma began enforcing limits on Full seats on March 18, 2026, and sells extra credits as a subscription or pay-as-you-go.
Is Adobe Firefly safe for commercial use?
Adobe trained its own Firefly models on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public domain material, and it offers IP indemnification to eligible enterprise customers for outputs from those models. Firefly also now offers partner models from Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Runway, Luma and others. Adobe says partner models are not developed by Adobe and that you are responsible for deciding whether one is appropriate for your project, so the commercial safety claims apply most clearly to Adobe's own models.
Can AI replace UX designers?
Current tools speed up parts of the work: first drafts of screens, variations, prototypes and research synthesis. They do not decide what to build, judge trade-offs between users and business goals, or run the conversations with stakeholders that shape a product. Prompt-to-app tools such as Figma Make and Uizard produce generic layouts unless someone gives them a design system and clear constraints. Designers who use them tend to spend less time on production and more on direction and testing.
What happened to Uizard?
Miro, the online whiteboard company, bought Uizard in May 2024. Uizard said at the time that the product would stay available and unchanged, and in October 2026 it still sells its own plans: Free with three AI generations a month, Pro at $12 a month billed yearly with 500, and Business at $39 a month billed yearly with 5,000. Its Autodesigner turns text prompts, screenshots and hand-drawn sketches into editable screens.
