WordPress.com Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Managed WordPress hosting with an AI site builder, AI assistant and plugins from $4

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is WordPress.com?

WordPress.com is Automattic's hosted version of WordPress, the open-source software behind a large share of the web. The WordPress Agent builds a full site from a description, and the WordPress AI Assistant edits content, layouts and images inside the editor on all paid plans. A free plan exists; paid plans run from $4 to $45 a month billed annually.

WordPress.com is run by Automattic, the company founded by WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg, which also owns WooCommerce, Jetpack and Tumblr. It offers the same open-source WordPress software as wordpress.org, but fully managed: hosting, security updates, backups, a global CDN and SSL are included in the plan price. That makes it a middle ground between self-hosting WordPress and closed site builders such as Wix or Squarespace. Bloggers, publishers, small businesses and online stores use it, and Automattic also sells an Enterprise tier, WordPress VIP, to large media and corporate sites that need high-traffic hosting and support.

Sites are built in the block editor, using themes and patterns for layouts. Paid plans from Personal up can install any of more than 60,000 plugins and upload custom themes, a change from older plans that limited plugins to the Business tier. Premium adds premium themes, advanced analytics, ad revenue and payment buttons for PayPal and Stripe. Business adds SFTP and SSH, WP-CLI, Git and GitHub deployments, 50 GB of storage and priority support. Commerce adds a WooCommerce experience with bundled store extensions and support for selling in 60+ countries. Newsletters, subscriber management, stats and social sharing are built in through Jetpack.

AI comes in two parts. The WordPress Agent, the AI website builder, asks you to describe a site and then builds a fully designed site with pages, content and images, and can add a WooCommerce store if you say you want to sell online; it is available on all paid plans, with usage limits. The WordPress AI Assistant, launched in February 2026 and opened to all paid plans as an opt-in in May 2026, works inside the editor and Media Library to tighten writing, generate and edit images, adjust layouts and troubleshoot site issues. It works best with block themes. Studio Code, a terminal coding agent for building WordPress sites locally, entered beta in May 2026.

The free plan uses a wordpress.com address, shows ads to visitors and has 1 GB of storage. Personal costs $4 a month billed annually, or $9 month to month, and removes ads, includes a free domain for the first year, 6 GB of storage and plugins. Premium costs $8 annually or $18 monthly with 13 GB. Business costs $25 annually or $40 monthly, and Commerce $45 annually or $70 monthly, both with 50 GB of storage. Three-year terms lower Personal to $2.75 a month. The free domain renews at standard rates after year one. Enterprise is priced by quote through WordPress VIP.

WordPress.com's strengths are content publishing, ownership of a portable open-source site and access to the plugin library without managing servers. Its weaknesses are a block editor that takes time to learn, server access only from Business up, and AI features that are newer than rivals' builders. Wix and Squarespace offer more polished drag-and-drop editing and AI design tools. Framer and Webflow suit design-led marketing sites, and Hostinger Horizons builds web apps from prompts. Ghost is a lighter option for paid newsletters. Choose WordPress.com if you publish regularly, want WordPress plugins and portability, and prefer managed hosting with AI help built in.

Who is WordPress.com best for?

  • Bloggers and publishers who post regularly.
  • Small businesses that want WordPress plugins without managing hosting.
  • Creators who want an AI-built site they can keep editing.
  • Stores that want WooCommerce on managed hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does WordPress.com cost?

WordPress.com has a free plan. Paid plans cost $4 (Personal), $8 (Premium), $25 (Business) and $45 (Commerce) a month billed annually, or $9, $18, $40 and $70 billed monthly. Three-year terms bring Personal down to $2.75 a month. All paid plans include a free domain for the first year.

What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

WordPress.org distributes the free, open-source WordPress software, which you install on hosting you pay for and maintain yourself. WordPress.com is Automattic's managed service running that software, with hosting, security, backups and support included. Paid WordPress.com plans now allow plugins and custom themes, so the gap is mostly about server control and price.

Does WordPress.com have an AI website builder?

Yes. The WordPress Agent builds a complete site from a description of your business or project, including pages, content and images, and can set up a WooCommerce store. It is available on all paid plans with usage limits. New sites start in Coming Soon mode until you launch them publicly.

What can the WordPress AI Assistant do?

The WordPress AI Assistant works inside the editor and Media Library. It rewrites text for clarity and SEO, generates and edits images, adjusts layouts and design choices, and gives site-aware troubleshooting help. It is an opt-in feature on all current paid plans at no extra cost and works best with block themes.

WordPress.com or Wix, which is better?

Wix has a more visual drag-and-drop editor and a wider set of built-in business apps, which suits users who want design freedom without learning WordPress. WordPress.com is stronger for blogs and content sites, offers 60,000+ plugins and lets you move your site to any WordPress host. Writers usually prefer WordPress.com.
