Adobe Color Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Free color wheel, palette extractor and accessibility checker that syncs to Creative Cloud

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Adobe Color?

Adobe Color is a free web app for creating color themes from harmony rules, extracting palettes and gradients from images, checking contrast and simulating color blindness. Themes save to Creative Cloud Libraries for use in Photoshop, Illustrator and other Adobe apps. Adobe says its Sensei AI helps find color combinations, and trend galleries come from Behance and Adobe Stock.

Adobe Color started in 2006 as Adobe Kuler, a web app and community for sharing color themes, and was renamed Adobe Color in 2014. It now appears under the Adobe Express brand at color.adobe.com. It serves graphic designers, illustrators, web and UI designers, photographers, marketers and students who want harmonious, accessible palettes, especially those already using Creative Cloud. Because saved themes sync automatically to Creative Cloud Libraries, a palette made in the browser appears in the Libraries panel of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Adobe Express. The Adobe Capture mobile app extends the same tools to your phone's camera.

The color wheel builds themes of up to 10 colors using harmony rules from color theory: analogous, monochromatic, triad, complementary, split complementary, square, compound and shades, or a custom arrangement. You set a base color by hex code, sliders or dragging, and the others move with it. Extract Theme pulls a palette from an uploaded image using moods such as bright, muted, deep or dark, and Extract Gradient builds gradients from images. Themes convert between RGB, CMYK, LAB, HSV and Pantone values and export as CSS, XML or LESS. The Explore and Trends tabs browse community themes and curated galleries from Behance and Adobe Stock.

Accessibility tools are a major part of Adobe Color. The contrast checker tests text and background colors against WCAG standards, which recommend at least 4.5:1 for normal text at AA level and 7:1 for AAA, and suggests fixes when a pair fails. The color blind safe tool simulates protanopia, deuteranopia and tritanopia and flags conflicting colors in your theme. Adobe says its Sensei AI works behind the scenes to suggest color combinations and power image extraction. Adobe Color does not offer a prompt-based AI palette generator; for text-to-palette ideas, designers use Coolors AI, Khroma or generative tools such as Adobe Firefly.

Adobe Color is free to use in a web browser. Exploring themes and using the color wheel works without signing in, while saving themes, publishing to the community and syncing to Creative Cloud Libraries require a free Adobe account. There is no paid tier for Adobe Color itself, although getting the most from synced themes assumes you use paid Creative Cloud apps such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Adobe Capture is a free mobile app. Because the tool is part of Adobe's broader platform, its interface and features are maintained by Adobe rather than an independent developer, and it carries no ads or save limits.

Adobe Color's strengths are its free price, solid color theory rules, accessibility checks, image extraction, Pantone and CMYK conversion and automatic sync with Creative Cloud. Its weaknesses are fewer palette layouts and visualizations than Coolors, no prompt-based AI generator and limited value outside Adobe's apps. Coolors generates palettes faster and previews them on layouts. Khroma learns your preferences. Huemint and Colormind generate palettes with machine learning. Canva includes palette tools inside its editor. Choose Adobe Color if you work in Creative Cloud and want free, theory-based palettes with accessibility checks that flow into your design apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Adobe Color free?

Yes. Adobe Color is free in a web browser. You can use the color wheel, extract themes and gradients from images, check contrast and simulate color blindness without paying. A free Adobe account lets you save themes, publish to the community and sync palettes to Creative Cloud Libraries.

Does Adobe Color use AI?

Adobe says Adobe Color is powered by Adobe Sensei AI working behind the scenes to suggest color combinations and extract themes from images. It does not include a prompt-based AI palette generator. For that, designers often use Coolors AI or generate images with Adobe Firefly and extract palettes from them.

How do I check color contrast in Adobe Color?

Open the Accessibility Tools and choose the contrast checker, then enter text and background colors. Adobe Color reports the contrast ratio and whether it passes WCAG levels, such as 4.5:1 for normal text at AA. If a pair fails, it suggests adjusted colors that meet the standard.

What was Adobe Kuler?

Adobe Kuler was the original name of Adobe Color, launched in 2006 as a web app and community for creating and sharing color themes. Adobe renamed it Adobe Color in 2014 and has since added accessibility tools, gradient extraction, trend galleries and closer integration with Creative Cloud and Adobe Express.

Adobe Color or Coolors, which is better?

Adobe Color is free, builds themes from color theory rules and syncs directly to Photoshop, Illustrator and other Adobe apps. Coolors is faster for exploring random palettes, offers a large library and layout previews, and adds AI generation on its paid Pro plan. Adobe users usually start with Adobe Color.
