Squarespace Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Template-led website builder with Blueprint AI, commerce and AI search tracking

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Squarespace?

Squarespace is a hosted website builder known for designer templates, used by creatives, restaurants, consultants and small shops. Blueprint AI builds a starter site from a short questionnaire, and every plan includes AI credits. Plans run from $19 a month billed annually ($25 monthly) to $99 a month; there is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.

Squarespace was founded by Anthony Casalena in 2003 and is one of the best-known hosted website builders, alongside Wix and Webflow. It went public in 2021 and was taken private by private equity firm Permira in a $7.2 billion deal that closed in October 2024. The company also runs a domain registrar, after buying Google Domains' customer accounts in 2023, and sells scheduling through Acuity, which it acquired in 2019. Its appeal is design quality with little effort. Templates are polished, typography and spacing come configured, and the editor limits choices so sites rarely look broken. That suits photographers, artists, restaurants and service businesses more than complex applications.

A new site starts either from one of more than 200 templates or from Blueprint AI. Blueprint asks about the business, goals and preferred style through forms and checkboxes, then generates pages, layouts, colors and fonts, which you refine in Fluid Engine, the drag-and-drop editor for version 7.1 sites. Built-in AI writes and rewrites page copy, product descriptions, blog posts and email campaigns. Commerce covers physical and digital products, services, courses, memberships and invoices, with Squarespace Payments, shipping labels and automated tax. Scheduling, email marketing and a link-in-bio tool sit in the same account. Custom CSS and JavaScript are available on paid plans for designers who want more control.

Squarespace does not name the language models behind its AI features. What it publishes is a credit system: Basic includes 10 AI credits once, Core 20 a month, Plus 40 and Advanced 120, all shared across AI writing and design tools and reset monthly. In 2026 it added AI Visibility, which tracks how a brand appears in AI search answers. One run scans a single query on one AI model, and plans include the same number of runs as credits. The feature is limited to English-language accounts. Reviewers describe Blueprint's output as a functional but plain starting point that still needs manual design work to stand out.

There is no free plan. A 14-day trial, extendable once by seven days, lets you build before paying. Basic costs $19 a month billed annually or $25 monthly, with two contributors and card fees of 2.9 percent plus 30 cents. Core, at $29 annually or $39 monthly, adds unlimited contributors, advanced analytics and code injection. Plus, at $49 annually or $65 monthly, lowers card fees to 2.7 percent, and Advanced, at $99 annually or $139 monthly, lowers them to 2.5 percent and removes the fee on memberships and digital content. Annual plans include a free domain for the first year, after which it renews at standard rates.

Squarespace's limits show up as sites grow. App and plugin choice is narrow next to Wix or WordPress, blog and SEO controls are basic, and the editor does not allow the layout freedom of Webflow or Framer. Store owners with large catalogs usually move to Shopify. Wix has a free plan, more apps and its own AI site builder. Webflow and Framer suit designers who want pixel-level control and interactions. Durable and Hostinger Horizons generate a site from a prompt for less money. Pick Squarespace if you want a good-looking portfolio, restaurant or service site quickly and care more about design than extensibility.

  • Photographers, artists and designers who need a polished portfolio fast.
  • Restaurants and service businesses that want booking and payments in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Squarespace cost?

Squarespace has four plans. Basic is $19 a month billed annually or $25 monthly, Core is $29 or $39, Plus is $49 or $65, and Advanced is $99 or $139. Higher plans lower card processing fees and remove transaction fees on digital content. Annual plans include a free custom domain for the first year.

Does Squarespace have a free plan?

No. Squarespace offers a 14-day free trial, which can be extended once by seven days, but you must choose a paid plan to publish a site long term. Wix and WordPress.com are the main builders with free plans. Squarespace does let you build and preview the full site during the trial.

Squarespace or Wix, which is better?

Squarespace has more polished templates and a more constrained editor, which suits people who want a good-looking site with little design work. Wix offers a free plan, a larger app market, more layout freedom and its own AI site builder. Store owners and people who need many integrations tend to prefer Wix.

What AI features does Squarespace include?

Squarespace includes Blueprint AI, which generates a starter site from a questionnaire, AI writing for pages, products, blogs and emails, and AI Visibility for tracking brand mentions in AI search answers. Usage draws on AI credits: 10 one-time on Basic, then 20, 40 and 120 a month on Core, Plus and Advanced.

Can I sell products on Squarespace?

Yes. All plans can sell unlimited physical products, services and digital products, with free invoicing. Card fees are 2.9 percent plus 30 cents on Basic, falling to 2.5 percent plus 30 cents on Advanced. Plus and Advanced add advanced shipping, tax tools and release features such as purchase limits and countdown timers.
