Azure AI Speech Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)
Microsoft's cloud speech API for transcription, neural voices, translation and avatars
Last updated: October 26, 2026
What is Azure AI Speech?
Azure AI Speech, now called Azure Speech in Foundry Tools, is Microsoft's cloud API for speech to text, text to speech, speech translation and talking avatars. It offers more than 400 neural voices, custom voice training, batch transcription at $0.18 an hour and MAI voice models. A free tier includes 5 audio hours and 500,000 characters a month.
Azure AI Speech is the speech service in Microsoft's Azure cloud, now listed as Azure Speech in Foundry Tools within Microsoft Foundry, formerly Azure AI Foundry. It descends from the Bing Speech and Custom Speech services of the 2010s and powers features across Microsoft products such as Teams captions and Copilot voice. Developers use it through REST APIs, Speech SDKs for languages including C#, Python, Java and JavaScript, and the Speech Studio web console. Its main customers are enterprises building call center analytics, captioning, voice agents, accessibility features and audiobooks, especially those already on Azure that want speech inside their existing compliance and billing setup.
Speech to text covers real-time streaming, fast transcription for files and batch transcription for large volumes, with diarization, language identification and pronunciation assessment. Custom Speech lets teams adapt models to domain vocabulary and acoustic conditions. Text to speech offers more than 400 prebuilt neural voices across more than 140 languages and locales, with SSML control over pitch, rate and speaking styles such as cheerful or empathetic. Neural HD voices add more natural delivery. Custom Neural Voice trains a brand voice from recordings, and Personal Voice clones a voice from a short sample under limited access. Speech translation, video translation and text to speech avatars round out the service.
Microsoft has added its own MAI models and voice agent tooling. The Voice Live API combines recognition, a language model and speech output in one low-latency stream for voice agents, connected to Foundry Agent Service. On October 1, 2026, Microsoft AI released MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, which it says ranks first for accuracy on Artificial Analysis and returns partial transcripts in about 100 milliseconds across 60 languages, along with MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash for 23 languages with cross-language voice cloning. These models are in public preview without a service level agreement, so Microsoft does not recommend them for production yet.
Pricing is pay-as-you-go and billed per second of audio or per character. The Free (F0) tier includes 5 audio hours of real-time transcription and 500,000 text to speech characters a month. On standard rates, real-time transcription costs $1 an hour, fast transcription $0.36 and batch $0.18, with custom real-time models at $1.20. Neural voices cost about $16 per million characters according to third-party trackers, MAI-Voice-2.1 $22 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash $15. MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming has an introductory price of $0.54 an hour through 2026. Commitment tiers lower rates for high volumes, and connected or disconnected containers allow on-premises deployment.
Azure AI Speech is strongest for enterprises that need broad language coverage, custom models, private networking and container deployment under Azure contracts. Its downsides are a complex pricing page, a learning curve across SDKs and Speech Studio, and newer MAI models still in preview. Deepgram and AssemblyAI focus on developer-friendly transcription and voice agent APIs, ElevenLabs leads on expressive voices and cloning, Amazon Polly and Google Cloud's speech services suit teams on those clouds, and Speechmatics offers on-premises transcription. Choose Azure AI Speech if your organization runs on Azure and wants speech services with enterprise controls and many languages.
Who is Azure AI Speech best for?
- Enterprises already on Azure that need speech services.
- Call centers transcribing and analyzing calls at volume.
- Apps that need voices in many languages and locales.
- Teams that must deploy speech models in containers on-premises.

Technical Details
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Azure AI Speech cost?
Azure Speech bills per second of audio and per character. Standard real-time transcription is $1 an hour, fast transcription $0.36 and batch $0.18. Text to speech starts around $15 per million characters for Flash voices, with MAI-Voice-2.1 at $22. The free F0 tier includes 5 audio hours and 500,000 characters each month.
Is there a free tier for Azure AI Speech?
Yes. The Free (F0) tier gives 5 audio hours of real-time speech to text, 0.5 million text to speech characters and 5 hours of speech translation each month, with lower rate limits. Batch transcription is not available on F0. New Azure accounts may also receive trial credits that apply to paid usage.
What are the MAI speech models?
MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash are Microsoft AI's own speech models, released October 1, 2026 through Azure Speech. Microsoft says the streaming model leads Artificial Analysis accuracy rankings, and the voices support 23 languages with cross-language cloning. They are in public preview without an SLA.
Azure AI Speech or Deepgram, which is better?
Deepgram offers a simpler developer experience, fast streaming transcription and a voice agent API with clear per-minute pricing. Azure AI Speech covers more languages, adds neural voices, translation and avatars, and supports custom models, private networking and containers. Startups often pick Deepgram, while Azure-based enterprises usually stay with Azure Speech.
Can I run Azure AI Speech on-premises?
Yes. Microsoft offers speech to text and neural text to speech as Docker containers. Connected containers send usage data to Azure for billing, while disconnected containers run fully offline under an approved commitment plan. Containers support prebuilt neural voices but not HD, custom or Personal Voice models.
