Turnitin Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)
Plagiarism checking, AI writing detection and process-tracking writing tools for schools
Last updated: October 26, 2026
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is the most widely used plagiarism and academic integrity platform in schools and universities. Feedback Studio checks submissions for similarity and supports grading, the Originality add-on adds AI writing and paraphrase detection, and Clarity lets students draft inside a tracked writing space. It is sold only to institutions, with pricing quoted by student count and features.
Turnitin was founded in 1998 by four University of California, Berkeley graduate students and grew into the default plagiarism checker for higher education and many secondary schools. It is owned by Advance, the media company, and is based in Oakland, California. When it switched on AI writing detection in April 2023, Turnitin said the feature reached more than 10,700 institutions and 2.1 million educators serving over 62 million students. Its products include Feedback Studio for similarity checking and grading, Originality for integrity add-ons, iThenticate for researchers and publishers, Gradescope for assessment, and ExamSoft for secure exams. Students rarely buy it; it reaches them through their institution.
Feedback Studio compares each submission against web pages, published journals and Turnitin's large repository of past student papers, then produces a Similarity Report that highlights matching passages with their sources. Instructors grade in the same view with rubrics, QuickMark comments, voice feedback and peer review, and the tool plugs into Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace and other learning management systems. The Originality add-on contributes AI writing detection, AI paraphrasing detection that flags text altered by tools such as QuillBot, bypasser detection for so-called humanizers, and Authorship tools that look for contract cheating through submission metadata and linguistic analysis. iThenticate checks manuscripts and grant proposals.
Turnitin's AI writing detection scores each sentence and averages the result into a document percentage. Turnitin says its document-level false positive rate is below 1% for papers with more than 20% AI writing, based on tests on 800,000 pre-ChatGPT papers, and it marks scores under 20% with an asterisk because they are less reliable. It needs at least 300 words. AI writing detection covers English, Spanish, Japanese and Arabic, while paraphrase and bypasser detection are English-only. Turnitin stresses that the score is not proof of misconduct and should start a conversation. Some universities, including Vanderbilt in 2023, have disabled the AI detector over concerns about false accusations.
Turnitin Clarity, announced in March 2025 and sold as a paid add-on to Feedback Studio from the second half of 2025, gives students a composition space inside their learning platform. Instructors see a Writing Report with playback of the drafting process, pasted text, writing time and flagged points of interest, rather than only the final paper. Educators can enable an optional AI assistant with guardrails that give feedback without writing for the student, plus grammar and citation checks. Turnitin does not publish prices; they depend on institution type, enrollment and products, and buyers contact sales. Licenses are typically annual, per full-time student.
Turnitin's strengths are its huge comparison database, deep LMS integration, familiarity among faculty and a broad set of integrity tools from similarity checking to process tracking. Its weaknesses are opaque institutional pricing, no plan for individuals, debate over AI detection accuracy and short-text limits, and student concerns about papers being stored in its repository. Copyleaks offers AI and plagiarism detection in more languages with self-serve plans. GPTZero and Pangram focus on AI detection with free tiers, and Grammarly Authorship tracks writing in Google Docs and Word. Choose Turnitin if your institution needs an established, LMS-integrated integrity system across many courses.

Can students buy Turnitin?
No. Turnitin sells only to institutions, so students use it through their school or university, usually via Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle or another learning platform. Students who want to check drafts on their own often use self-serve tools such as Copyleaks, Grammarly, GPTZero or Pangram, which have free tiers or monthly plans.
How accurate is Turnitin's AI detector?
Turnitin says its document false positive rate is below 1% for papers with more than 20% AI writing, based on tests on 800,000 pre-ChatGPT papers. It flags scores under 20% as less reliable and requires at least 300 words. Turnitin says the score is not proof of misconduct and should prompt a conversation.
What is Turnitin Clarity?
Turnitin Clarity is a paid add-on to Feedback Studio that gives students a writing space inside their learning platform. Instructors receive a Writing Report with playback of the drafting process, pasted text and writing time. Educators can turn on an optional AI assistant that gives feedback without writing for students.
Does Turnitin detect paraphrasing tools and humanizers?
Turnitin's Originality add-on includes AI paraphrasing detection, which flags AI text that has been reworded by tools such as QuillBot, and bypasser detection for humanizer tools meant to evade detectors.
