Copyleaks Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

AI and plagiarism detection in 30+ languages, with AI image checks, an API and LMS plugins

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Copyleaks?

Copyleaks detects AI-generated text and plagiarism in one report, covering AI detection in more than 30 languages and plagiarism in over 100. It also checks images for AI generation, scans whole websites and integrates with Canvas, Moodle and other learning platforms. Personal plans start at $13.99 a month billed annually, with credits that cover 250 words each.

Copyleaks was founded in 2015 by Alon Yamin and Yehonatan Bitton and is headquartered in New York, with engineering in Israel. It began as a plagiarism checker built on text analysis and in January 2023, weeks after ChatGPT's release, launched one of the first commercial AI content detectors. It now sells to individuals, businesses and educational institutions, with products for AI detection, plagiarism detection, source code originality, AI image detection and governance of how employees use generative AI. Its customers include universities, school districts, publishers and enterprises that want to check content or track unlicensed code and data leaking into AI tools.

A Copyleaks scan returns a combined report. The AI detector highlights passages it believes were written by AI, and AI Logic explains which phrases drove the result, so reviewers see why text was flagged. The plagiarism checker compares content against billions of web pages, open-access journals, code repositories and a Shared Data Hub of user-submitted documents, catching paraphrasing, character swaps and text translated from other languages. Users can scan multiple files at once, upload a sitemap to check an entire website, and work from Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions or a Google Docs add-on. AI image detection now shares the same credit pool.

Copyleaks says its AI detector is more than 99% accurate with a false positive rate around 0.2%, based on internal testing of English datasets, and it publishes per-language accuracy for French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. A Business Insider test in 2025 rated Copyleaks the most accurate of eight detectors on its sample, according to Copyleaks. As with every detector, results are probabilistic, and accuracy varies with text length, editing and language. Copyleaks markets itself as GDPR-compliant and SOC 2 and SOC 3 certified. Its API and MCP server let developers and AI agents run scans programmatically on the same credit meter as the web app.

New users receive a small number of free credits. The Personal plan costs $16.99 a month with 100 credits, or $13.99 a month billed annually at $167.88, which includes 1,200 credits for the year. Pro costs $99.99 a month with 1,000 credits, or $74.99 a month billed annually with 12,000 credits, and includes up to 25 user seats, advanced filters, website scans, cross-language detection and analytics. One credit covers up to 250 words or one image. Extra credits can be bought at any time. Enterprise and Education plans are custom priced, with education pricing based on full-time enrollment and including LMS integrations.

Copyleaks's strengths are broad language coverage, combined AI and plagiarism reports, explainable highlights, image detection and strong institutional integrations. Its weaknesses are small credit allowances on monthly plans, credits that do not stack when switching plans, a strict refund policy and the usual uncertainty of AI detection. Turnitin dominates higher education with a larger student paper database. GPTZero and Pangram offer generous free tiers, and Pangram scored best in a 2025 University of Chicago study. Originality.ai targets web publishers, and Winston AI adds OCR for handwriting. Choose Copyleaks if you need AI and plagiarism checks across many languages.
