Pangram Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

AI text detector that led a 2025 University of Chicago test, with a free daily allowance

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Pangram?

Pangram is an AI writing detector from Pangram Labs that flags text written or assisted by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other models, including humanized text. A 2025 University of Chicago working paper found near-zero error rates for it. The free plan checks 2,000 words a day, Individual costs $20 a month and a developer API costs $0.05 per 100 words.

Pangram Labs was founded in Brooklyn in 2023 by Max Spero, its chief executive, and Bradley Emi, its chief technology officer, both former AI engineers, and launched as Checkfor.ai that October before renaming in April 2024. Reuters reported in June 2025 that it raised about $4 million in seed funding led by ScOp Venture Capital. Its customers include Quora and NewsGuard, alongside professors, editors, publishers and researchers. Pangram sells to individuals, teams, schools and platforms that moderate user-generated content, and it publishes technical reports on how its classifier is trained, including a 2024 paper on arXiv describing its approach.

You paste text or upload a file, and Pangram returns a verdict on whether the text is human, AI-generated or AI-assisted, with highlighted segments and interpretability features that explain the result. It works in more than 20 languages, reads files with OCR, and runs inside a Chrome extension and Google Docs. Paid plans add plagiarism detection on every scan and automatic feed scanning, which checks posts on social media, Substack and other sites as you browse. AI image detection, a research preview, is included on all plans with separate limits. For schools, Pangram integrates with Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle and Google Classroom and says it does not train on student data.

Pangram's technical report describes a transformer classifier trained with a method it calls hard negative mining with synthetic mirrors, which pairs human documents with AI imitations to cut false positives. Accuracy is its main selling point. In an August 2025 University of Chicago Becker Friedman Institute working paper, Brian Jabarian and Alex Imas tested Pangram, Originality.ai, GPTZero and an open-source baseline on 1,992 human and AI passages, and found Pangram achieved near-zero false positive and false negative rates and kept catching text altered by the StealthGPT humanizer. The authors also calculated it was the cheapest per correctly flagged AI passage. Pangram no longer scores texts under 50 words.

The Free plan needs no payment method and allows up to 2,000 words a day, about 20 checks, plus three image scans. Individual costs $20 a month, or $15 a month billed annually at $180, for 300,000 words a month, plagiarism detection, feed scanning and 100 image scans. Professional costs $65 a month, or $45 a month annually at $540, for 1.5 million words, 500 image scans and $200 of monthly API usage. Teams costs $20 per seat a month from two seats. Paid seat plans include a seven-day trial. The Developer API charges $0.05 per 100 words with prepaid credits, bulk scans at a 20% discount and free access for academic researchers.

Pangram's strengths are strong independent accuracy results, resistance to humanizers, a usable free tier, transparent per-word API pricing and explanations of each verdict. Its weaknesses are a young company with a small team, limits on very short text, plagiarism checks reserved for paid plans and the reality that no detector is perfect, so results should support rather than replace human judgment. GPTZero is a popular alternative with education features and writing replay. Turnitin is entrenched in universities, Copyleaks covers more languages, and Originality.ai targets web publishers. Choose Pangram if accuracy and low false positives matter most, especially at scale through the API.

Who is Pangram best for?

  • Educators who need low false positive rates.
  • Editors screening freelance submissions.
  • Platforms moderating AI spam through an API.
  • Researchers studying AI text at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Pangram cost?

Pangram's Free plan checks up to 2,000 words a day. Individual costs $20 a month or $15 billed annually, Professional $65 a month or $45 annually, and Teams $20 per seat a month. The Developer API charges $0.05 per 100 words on prepaid credits. Enterprise and education licenses are custom priced.

How accurate is Pangram?

In an August 2025 University of Chicago working paper, researchers found Pangram had near-zero false positive and false negative rates on medium and long passages across GPT-4.1, Claude and Gemini text, outperforming Originality.ai and GPTZero. No detector is perfect, so results should inform rather than decide misconduct cases.

Can Pangram detect humanized AI text?

Pangram says it detects AI text that has been rewritten by humanizer and paraphrasing tools, and the 2025 University of Chicago study found its false negative rate stayed low on passages altered by StealthGPT. Pangram also labels text as AI-assisted when a person has edited AI output or used AI to polish writing.

Does Pangram have an API?

Yes. The Developer API uses pay-as-you-go prepaid credits from $5 to $2,000, charging $0.05 per 100 words for realtime checks with a 20% discount on bulk scans. Academic researchers can request free access, and the Professional plan includes $200 of monthly API usage. Individual plans do not include API access.

Pangram or GPTZero, which is better?

Pangram scored better than GPTZero on false negatives and humanizer resistance in the 2025 University of Chicago study, and costs less per correctly flagged passage there. GPTZero offers more education features, such as writing replay and classroom tools, and a well-known brand. Many educators try both on their own samples.
