SpyFu Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Competitor keyword and Google Ads research with deep history and unlimited exports

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is SpyFu?

SpyFu is a competitor research tool for SEO and Google Ads that shows which keywords a domain ranks for or buys, its ad history and estimated budgets. It suits small businesses, PPC managers and agencies on a budget. Basic costs $29 a month billed annually, and Pro + AI costs $89 a month annually with unlimited exports and API access.

SpyFu is a search marketing research tool based in Scottsdale, Arizona, founded by Mike Roberts and built on keyword data he began collecting in 2005. Its long history is the main selling point: SpyFu says it stores more than 10 years of ranking and ad data per domain, and its marketing cites 18-plus years of keyword history. It sits in the same category as Semrush and Ahrefs but costs much less and focuses more on paid search. A user types a competitor's domain and sees the keywords it ranks for organically, the keywords it bids on in Google Ads, the ad copy it has tested over time and estimates of monthly clicks and spend.

Most sessions start with a domain search. The overview shows organic and paid keyword counts, estimated traffic value and top competitors. From there, users drill into the most profitable paid keywords, ad history showing every ad variation a competitor has run, and Kombat, which compares up to three domains to find keywords the others share and you lack. Keyword research covers volume, difficulty, cost per click and related questions. Backlink search, rank tracking, automated reports and a Google Ads Advisor that suggests keywords to buy round out the tool. A Site Audit crawler with AI fixes, added in 2026, checks technical SEO and can publish corrections to connected sites.

SpyFu's AI features arrived through RivalFlow, an AI content optimization tool it bundles into the Pro + AI and Team plans. RivalFlow compares your pages with higher-ranking competitors and suggests specific additions to close the gap. A ChatGPT integration lets users query SpyFu data inside ChatGPT, and AI Brand Monitoring tracks how a brand appears in AI search answers. The Site Audit uses monthly AI credits, from 1,000 on Basic to 10,000 on Team, to generate fixes. The underlying data is SpyFu's own crawl of search results rather than clickstream panels, which is why its traffic estimates differ from Semrush and Similarweb figures.

Pricing is published. Basic costs $39 monthly or $29 a month billed annually, with 10,000-row search results and exports, 5,000 weekly tracked keywords, one user and no API or AI tools. Pro + AI costs $119 a month after a $59 first month, or $89 a month annually, with unlimited results and exports, 15,000 tracked keywords, RivalFlow for one site, ChatGPT integration and API access. Team and Agency costs $249 monthly or $187 a month annually, with five users, 50,000 tracked keywords and white-label reporting. Extra users cost $30 each. A limited free search shows partial results without an account.

SpyFu's data is weakest outside the US and UK, and its backlink index is smaller than Ahrefs'. Technical SEO tools are newer and thinner than Semrush's, and the interface feels dated next to newer tools. Semrush covers more channels, including social and local, but starts around $140 a month. Ahrefs has the strongest backlink data, and Similarweb gives better traffic estimates for large sites. SE Ranking offers broad SEO features at a similar price to SpyFu. Pick SpyFu if your priority is seeing competitors' Google Ads keywords and ad tests over many years for little money; pick Semrush or Ahrefs for full SEO programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does SpyFu cost?

SpyFu Basic costs $39 monthly or $29 a month billed annually. Pro + AI costs $119 a month after a $59 first month, or $89 a month annually, and adds unlimited data, RivalFlow and API access. Team and Agency costs $249 monthly or $187 a month annually with five users. Extra users cost $30 each.

Is SpyFu free?

SpyFu offers limited free searches that show partial results for a domain or keyword without an account. Full results, exports, rank tracking and reports require a paid plan, starting at $29 a month on annual Basic. SpyFu also offers a money-back guarantee on paid plans, according to its purchase page.

SpyFu or Semrush, which should I use?

SpyFu is cheaper and stronger on competitors' Google Ads history, with unlimited exports on Pro. Semrush covers far more, including technical audits, local SEO, content tools, social and broader international data, but plans start around $140 a month. Small businesses focused on PPC research often choose SpyFu; full SEO teams lean toward Semrush.

How accurate is SpyFu data?

SpyFu builds its data from its own crawls of Google search results and ads, then estimates clicks, traffic and budgets from rankings and cost-per-click data. Estimates are directional rather than exact, and coverage is best in the US and UK. Compare SpyFu figures against Google Search Console or Google Ads data for your own site.

Does SpyFu have an API?

Yes. API access is included on Pro + AI and Team / Agency plans, but not on Basic. The API returns domain, keyword, ranking and ad data for use in dashboards or internal tools. SpyFu also offers a ChatGPT integration on paid plans that streams domain-level ranking data into ChatGPT conversations.
