SerpApi Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Real-time search results API for Google, Bing, Amazon and dozens of other engines

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is SerpApi?

SerpApi is an API that returns search engine results pages as structured JSON, covering Google Search, Maps, News, Shopping, Scholar and dozens of other engines. Developers use it for SEO tools, price tracking and grounding AI agents in live search data. A free plan includes 250 searches a month, and paid plans start at $25 for 1,000.

SerpApi is an Austin, Texas company founded in 2017 by Julien Khaleghy. It runs the scraping infrastructure that most teams do not want to build themselves: rotating proxies, CAPTCHA solving, browser rendering and parsers that turn a results page into clean JSON. Customers send a query with parameters such as location, language and device, and receive organic results, ads, knowledge panels, local packs, shopping listings and AI Overviews as fields. The service is one of the best-known search APIs and is often compared with Serper, Bright Data and newer AI-focused search APIs such as Tavily and Exa. Its customer list includes SEO platforms, e-commerce companies and AI startups.

Developers call a single endpoint and choose an engine. Google coverage is the deepest, with separate APIs for Search, Images, News, Maps, Shopping, Scholar, Jobs, Flights, Hotels, Trends, Lens, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Other engines include Bing, Baidu, Yandex, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Home Depot, Apple App Store and Google Play. Official libraries cover Python, JavaScript, Ruby, Go, Java and PHP, and a playground shows the JSON for any query. Only successful searches count against a plan, and cached results within an hour are free. ZeroTrace mode on large plans keeps no record of queries or results.

For AI builders, SerpApi is a way to give a model current search results. LangChain, LlamaIndex and other agent frameworks include SerpApi tools, and an official MCP server lets Claude and other assistants run searches directly. Unlike Tavily or Exa, which return summarized or cleaned page content designed for language models, SerpApi returns the raw structure of the results page, so applications usually need a second step to fetch and read the linked pages. That suits use cases where the layout of Google's results matters, such as rank tracking, ad monitoring, local business data and checking how often a brand appears in AI Overviews.

Plans are month to month. Free includes 250 searches a month at 50 an hour. Starter costs $25 for 1,000 searches, Developer $75 for 5,000, Production $150 for 15,000 and Big Data $275 for 30,000. Larger plans run from $725 for 100,000 to $2,750 for 500,000, and Cloud plans start at $3,750 for 1 million searches, falling below $2 per 1,000 at the highest volumes. Hourly throughput is capped at 20 percent of monthly volume on smaller plans. Production and higher include the U.S. Legal Shield, which SerpApi says covers up to $2 million in scraping liability. Unused searches do not roll over, and faster Ludicrous Speed options double the price.

SerpApi's main risk is legal. Google sued it in December 2025, alleging that it circumvents SearchGuard anti-scraping protections in violation of the DMCA. In July 2026 a federal judge in California dismissed Google's claims with leave to amend, Google filed an amended complaint in August, and the case continues. Price is the other drawback: Serper and DataForSEO charge far less per 1,000 queries. Tavily and Exa suit AI agents that need page content rather than result layouts, and Brave Search API offers an independent index. Choose SerpApi if you need reliable, structured Google results across many result types and engines and value its documentation and legal coverage.

  • SEO and rank-tracking tools that need structured Google results.
  • AI agents that need current search results through MCP or LangChain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does SerpApi cost?

SerpApi's free plan includes 250 searches a month. Paid plans are month to month: Starter $25 for 1,000 searches, Developer $75 for 5,000, Production $150 for 15,000 and Big Data $275 for 30,000. Larger plans reach $3,750 for 1 million searches. Only successful searches count, and unused searches do not roll over.

Is SerpApi legal to use?

Collecting public search results is generally lawful in the US, but Google sued SerpApi in December 2025 under the DMCA, claiming it bypasses anti-scraping measures. A judge dismissed the original claims in July 2026 with leave to amend, and the case continues. SerpApi offers a U.S. Legal Shield of up to $2 million on Production plans and above.

SerpApi or Tavily for AI agents?

Tavily returns cleaned page content and short answers designed for language models, so an agent can use results directly. SerpApi returns the structured layout of the search results page, including ads, local packs and AI Overviews, so agents usually need a second fetch step. Use SerpApi when the exact Google results matter.

Which search engines does SerpApi support?

SerpApi supports Google Search plus Google Maps, News, Images, Shopping, Scholar, Jobs, Flights, Hotels, Trends, Lens, AI Mode and AI Overviews. It also covers Bing, Baidu, Yandex, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Home Depot, the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Does SerpApi have an MCP server?

Yes. SerpApi maintains an official MCP server so Claude, Cursor and other MCP-compatible assistants can run searches across its supported engines using your API key. It also has integrations with LangChain, LlamaIndex and other agent frameworks, and official client libraries for Python, JavaScript, Ruby, Go, Java and PHP.
