PDF.ai Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Chat with PDFs, including scans, plus a developer API to parse, extract and split files

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is PDF.ai?

PDF.ai lets you upload a PDF and ask questions, with answers linked to the source page, built-in OCR for scans and Capture & Ask for charts and tables. A Chrome extension works on PDFs across the web. Its API v2 parses, extracts and splits documents for developers. The Hobby plan is free, and paid plans start at $10 a month billed yearly.

PDF.ai launched in 2023 during the first wave of chat-with-PDF tools and was built by indie founder Damon Chen, also known for Testimonial.to. It positions itself as a productivity tool for anyone who reads long PDFs, such as contracts, research papers, manuals, financial filings and textbooks, and increasingly as a document API for developers. The consumer app runs in the browser, with a Chrome extension that adds a chat panel to PDFs opened online. PDF.ai also offers a set of free single-purpose tools on its site, and lets paid users train a chatbot on their own documents and embed it on a website for manuals or FAQs.

The chat workflow is upload and ask: PDF.ai splits and indexes each file so that even reports of thousands of pages can be searched without filling a model's context window, then returns answers with links to the page where the information appears. Built-in OCR runs on scanned PDFs, with page limits per file by plan. Capture & Ask lets you draw a box around a chart, table, diagram or formula and ask about only that region, which helps where visuals do not extract well as text. Higher plans add an advanced model, OpenAI Whisper and text-to-speech audio features, team seats and a white-labeled PDF embed.

For developers, PDF.ai's API v2 offers endpoints to parse documents into structured text, extract fields against a schema, split long files and ask questions across parsed documents. It runs on credits: standard OCR parsing costs one credit a page, advanced vision-model parsing two, extraction two or four credits a page depending on the number of fields, and cached parses with the same settings are free. The API Free plan includes 200 credits a month, and paid API plans cost $49 for 3,000 credits, $99 for 10,000, $249 for 30,000 and $599 for 100,000 credits a month. Playgrounds let you test parsing, extraction and splitting without code before you generate a key.

The web app has four plans. Hobby is free, with one upload and 100 questions a month, OCR on two pages per file, 10 MB files and the basic model. Pro costs $10 a month billed yearly, or $17 monthly, with 100 uploads, 1,000 questions, OCR on 10 pages per file and 50 MB files. Ultimate costs $20 per user a month billed yearly, or $27 monthly, with unlimited uploads and questions, the advanced model, OCR on 50 pages and Capture & Ask. Enterprise costs $30 per user a month billed yearly, or $37 monthly, adding 100 MB files, team invites and a white-labeled embed. The website chatbot is a separate add-on.

PDF.ai's strengths are Capture & Ask for visual content, a capable parsing and extraction API, page-linked answers and a clean interface. Its weaknesses are a very small free plan, tight OCR page caps on lower tiers, and Capture & Ask and unlimited use reserved for Ultimate. AskYourPDF offers larger page limits and a choice of GPT, Claude and Gemini at similar prices. ChatPDF is the simplest option for occasional use. ChatDOC handles complex tables, and NotebookLM is free for study and research. Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant suits teams already in Acrobat. Choose PDF.ai if you need to ask about charts and tables or build document features through an API.

Who is PDF.ai best for?

  • Analysts asking about charts and tables in reports.
  • Developers adding PDF parsing and extraction to apps.
  • Students reading long papers and textbooks.
  • Teams embedding a document chatbot on a website.
