Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Adobe launched Acrobat AI Assistant in beta in February 2024 and as a paid add-on in April 2024, bringing a chat panel to the PDF software that most offices already use. In August 2025 Adobe introduced Acrobat Studio, a new top-tier plan that bundles Acrobat Pro, AI Assistant, PDF Spaces and Adobe Express Premium. AI Assistant works in Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on Windows and Mac, on the web, in mobile apps with voice prompts, and in Chrome and Edge extensions. Its users range from students and consumers reading terms of service to lawyers, sales teams, finance staff and researchers who handle long contracts, reports and proposals.

Inside a document, AI Assistant generates one-click summaries and overviews, suggests questions, answers your own questions and links each answer to the source passage so you can check it. It works across PDFs and other formats such as Word and PowerPoint files, and can compare several documents. Generative features turn content into emails, outlines, presentations and audio overviews. AI-powered PDF Actions let you ask in plain language to edit, convert, compress, redact or sign a file. Contract intelligence identifies agreements and pulls out key terms, dates and obligations, and can compare differences between contract versions. Adobe says customer content is never used to train its models.

PDF Spaces, launched in August 2025, is a workspace where you gather up to 100 PDFs, Microsoft 365 files and web links on a topic and ask questions across all of them. Each Space includes notes, citations and an AI Assistant that can be prebuilt, with roles such as Analyst or Instructor, or customized around your goals and tone. You can share a Space with colleagues or clients, who then explore the material with the same assistant, and see how they engage with it. Spaces can produce summaries, audio overviews, visual reports and presentations. PDF Spaces is English-only and requires Adobe cloud storage.

Acrobat Reader is free, and Acrobat AI Assistant can be added to Reader, Standard or Pro for $4.99 a month on an annual plan, with an education add-on at $1.99. Acrobat Standard costs $14.99 a month and Pro $19.99 a month on annual plans billed monthly. Acrobat Studio costs $24.99 a month on annual billing, $299.88 prepaid or $34.99 month to month, according to Adobe's US prices checked in July 2026, and includes AI Assistant, PDF Spaces and Adobe Express Premium. Pro and Studio offer seven-day free trials. Canceling an annual plan early can trigger a fee of half the remaining commitment. Teams and enterprise plans add admin controls.

AI Assistant's strengths are that it lives inside the PDF tools many people already use, cites its sources, handles PDF tasks by voice or text and covers the full workflow from reading to editing and signing. Its weaknesses are Adobe's subscription costs and cancellation fees, English-only PDF Spaces, and cloud processing that some organizations restrict. NotebookLM is a free option for research across sources. ChatPDF, AskYourPDF and PDF.ai are cheaper web tools for chatting with PDFs. Microsoft Copilot covers documents in Microsoft 365, and Foxit offers a lower-cost PDF editor with AI. Choose Acrobat AI Assistant if your team already works in Acrobat.
