Microsoft PowerPoint Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

The standard slide app, with Copilot drafting, editing and restyling decks for you

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Microsoft PowerPoint?

Microsoft PowerPoint is the most widely used presentation app, part of Microsoft 365. Copilot in PowerPoint creates decks from a prompt or a Word file, edits slides, generates images and follows company templates, with a choice of Anthropic or OpenAI models. PowerPoint for the web is free; Copilot comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month and business Copilot licenses.

PowerPoint started at Forethought Inc., which Microsoft bought in 1987, and it has been part of Microsoft Office ever since. It is still the default format for business, school and conference presentations, and most rival tools import and export.pptx files. PowerPoint runs on Windows, Mac, the web, iPad, iPhone and Android, with real-time co-authoring through OneDrive and SharePoint. Since 2023 Microsoft has built Copilot into the app, first as a side pane and, since April 2026, as an agent that carries out multi-step edits directly in the file. Copilot is available to consumers on Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium, and to businesses through Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses.

Without AI, PowerPoint offers slide layouts, themes, Designer suggestions, animations, transitions, Morph, presenter view with live captions, and recording to video. With Copilot, users can ask for a new presentation on a topic, or build one from a Word document, PDF or files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint. Copilot can also pull in current web sources and cite them. Inside an existing deck it adds or reorganizes slides, rewrites text, summarizes the presentation, answers questions about it and generates or replaces images. Interactive slides such as dashboards and timelines were added in 2026. In business accounts, Brand Kit and templates keep output on brand.

The April 2026 general availability of agentic Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint changed how the feature works. Copilot now plans and applies a sequence of edits, such as updating an older deck with new figures and talking points, rather than drafting one slide at a time. Users can choose between Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT models from OpenAI for those edits. Business users can define custom skills, reusable commands for repeated tasks, and can connect image libraries such as Adobe Experience Manager. A separate PowerPoint Agent in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app can generate a presentation from a chat. Usage limits on consumer plans are not published in detail.

PowerPoint for the web and mobile is free with a Microsoft account, but without Copilot. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and includes the desktop apps, 1 TB of storage and Copilot with monthly usage limits. Family costs $12.99 a month for up to six people, though Copilot is limited to the subscription owner. Microsoft 365 Premium adds higher Copilot limits for $19.99 a month. Businesses need a Microsoft 365 plan plus a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, listed at $30 per user a month on annual terms. Some business plans include basic Copilot Chat but not in-app editing.

Copilot in PowerPoint is strongest when your source material already lives in Microsoft 365. Reviewers note its design output is plainer than dedicated AI deck tools, and that drafts still need editing for layout and accuracy. Gamma and Beautiful.ai produce more styled decks from a prompt and share as web pages. Google Slides with Gemini suits Google Workspace teams. Canva offers presentation design with templates and Magic Design. Pitch focuses on collaborative startup decks. Choose PowerPoint with Copilot if your organization standardizes on.pptx files and Microsoft 365, and you want AI that edits real presentations within company templates.

Who is Microsoft PowerPoint best for?

  • Organizations that standardize on.pptx files and Microsoft 365.
  • Updating existing decks with new data inside company templates.
  • Turning Word documents and reports into first-draft presentations.
  • Teams that co-author decks in OneDrive and SharePoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Copilot in PowerPoint?

Consumers get Copilot in PowerPoint with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, Family at $12.99 or Premium at $19.99, which raises usage limits. Businesses need a Microsoft 365 plan plus a Microsoft 365 Copilot license at $30 per user a month on annual terms. The free web version of PowerPoint does not include Copilot.

Can Copilot create a PowerPoint from a Word document?

Yes. Copilot can build a presentation from a Word document, PDF or file stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, either by attaching it or naming it in your prompt. It drafts slides with titles, text, speaker notes and images. Review the result, since Copilot can omit details or misread tables in long source files.

Is PowerPoint free?

PowerPoint for the web and the mobile apps are free with a Microsoft account, covering editing, themes, co-authoring and presenting. The full desktop app and Copilot features require a Microsoft 365 subscription. Students and teachers at eligible schools can get Microsoft 365 Education at no cost through their institution.

PowerPoint Copilot or Gamma, which is better?

Gamma produces more visually styled decks from a single prompt and shares them as web pages, which suits quick pitches and content. PowerPoint with Copilot edits real.pptx files inside company templates and draws on Microsoft 365 documents, which suits corporate decks that must follow brand rules. Many people draft in Gamma and finish in PowerPoint.

Which AI model does Copilot in PowerPoint use?

Microsoft says users can choose between Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT models from OpenAI to power Copilot when it makes changes directly in a presentation. Model choice availability depends on your plan and admin settings. For business accounts, Microsoft states that prompts and files stay within the Microsoft 365 service boundary.
