Google Slides Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Free browser presentation app, with Gemini generating editable, on-brand decks

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Google Slides?

Google Slides is the free presentation app in Google Workspace, built for real-time collaboration in the browser. Gemini in Slides generates editable slides and full presentations from a prompt, grounded in Drive files and styled to match an existing deck, and creates images. Gemini features need Workspace Business Standard or higher, or a Google AI Pro subscription at $19.99 a month.

Google Slides launched in 2012 as part of Google Drive, based on technology from Google's 2007 acquisition of Zenter, and is now one of the most widely used presentation tools, especially in schools and startups. It runs in the browser and on Android and iOS, with offline mode in Chrome. Its main appeal is collaboration: several people can edit a deck at once, leave comments, assign action items and see version history, with no files to email. Slides imports and exports PowerPoint files, publishes decks to the web and embeds charts from Google Sheets that update when the data changes.

Core features include themes, layouts, master slides, transitions and animations, speaker notes, presenter view and Q&A from the audience. Live captions appear while presenting, and Slides can be presented directly into Google Meet. Add-ons from the Workspace Marketplace extend it with icons, diagrams and polling tools such as Pear Deck. Sharing controls let owners set view, comment or edit access and restrict downloads. Compared with PowerPoint, Slides has fewer advanced animation, design and media tools, but it costs nothing for personal use, works on any computer with a browser, and keeps every collaborator on the same version of the file.

Gemini has expanded quickly in Slides during 2026. Since April, Gemini creates individual slides with dynamic layouts that match the style of an existing deck, and can redesign or update existing slides. In late June, Google added full presentation generation: describe the deck, add Drive files as sources, attach a deck to match its style, answer follow-up questions, edit the proposed outline and approve it. Gemini then builds fully editable native slides, and can pull in content from Gmail, Chat and the web. In the side panel it also generates and edits images, summarizes presentations and rewrites text. Full presentation generation launched in English (United States) only.

Slides is free with a personal Google account and 15 GB of shared storage, without Gemini creation features. Google Workspace Business Starter costs about $7 per user a month and adds business email and storage but not the full Slides generation features. Business Standard, about $14 per user a month on annual plans, and Business Plus, about $22, include Gemini in Slides, as do Enterprise Standard and Plus. Consumers get the features with Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month or AI Ultra. Google said per-user usage limits apply to presentation generation after a promotional period that ran through at least August 1, 2026.

Google Slides with Gemini is the natural choice for Google Workspace teams, since decks can be grounded in Drive documents and shared without file conversions. Its limits are simpler design and animation tools than PowerPoint, and AI generation restricted to higher plans and English at launch. Microsoft PowerPoint with Copilot fits Microsoft 365 organizations and corporate templates. Gamma and Beautiful.ai create more styled decks from a prompt, Canva adds design-heavy templates, and Pitch targets collaborative startup decks. Teams that send decks outside the company may still export to PowerPoint. Choose Google Slides if your team already works in Google Workspace and wants free collaboration with AI drafting on paid plans.

Who is Google Slides best for?

  • Google Workspace teams building decks together.
  • Schools and students who need free presentation software.
  • Turning Drive documents into first-draft presentations.
  • Teams that present in Google Meet.
