Gimkit Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Live classroom quiz games with strategy modes, AI question generation and no ads

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Gimkit?

Gimkit is a classroom quiz game platform where students answer questions to earn in-game cash, buy upgrades and compete in more than 10 game modes. Teachers build question sets called kits by hand, by import or with Generate with AI. Gimkit Basic is free, and Gimkit Pro costs $14.99 a month or $59.88 a year.

Gimkit began as a high school project by Josh Feinsilber, who wanted a review game that held students' attention longer than standard quiz apps. The company says it has no ads and no outside investors. Its users are K-12 teachers, tutors and some college instructors who run live review sessions, homework practice and test prep. Students join with a game code on any device with a browser, and they do not need accounts to play. The core idea separates Gimkit from Kahoot: instead of racing to answer first, students earn virtual cash for correct answers and spend it on power-ups and upgrades, which adds strategy and keeps everyone answering.

Teachers build kits, which are question sets with multiple choice or typed answers, images and, on paid plans, audio. Kits can be written from scratch, imported from a spreadsheet template, pasted from flashcard sites or copied from the public Question Bank. KitCollab lets students submit questions to a kit before a game, with the teacher approving each one. Game modes range from the Classic cash mode and team play to 2D modes where students move around a map, capture flags or survive as a group while answering questions. Teachers can also send Assignments, which students complete on their own time, with reports showing accuracy for each question and student.

Since August 22, 2025, the kit editor has included Generate with AI. A teacher types a prompt describing the questions they want and picks a grade level from Pre-K to University, and the tool returns 10 to 30 questions. Teachers can add all of them, add individual questions or regenerate with a new prompt. AI-written questions carry a small icon until a teacher edits them. The community Gimkit Wiki reports the feature runs on a Google Gemini model. The generator writes from the prompt alone, so it cannot read a specific lesson, video or PDF; teachers who need questions from source material often use QuestionWell or Khanmigo and then import the results.

Gimkit Basic is free and includes kit creation, live games and a rotating selection of about three free game modes. New accounts get a 14-day Pro trial. Gimkit Pro costs $14.99 a month or $59.88 a year, according to the Gimkit help center, and adds every game mode, Assignments, audio and image questions and other premium features. Group plans cover departments and schools: Gimkit lists a Department plan at $650 a year for up to 20 teachers and a School plan at $1,000 a year. Schools can pay by purchase order, and Pro access on a group plan applies to every teacher added to it.

Gimkit's strengths are its strategy-based gameplay, a wide range of game modes, AI question generation, student-written questions through KitCollab and an ad-free model. Its weaknesses are a free tier limited to a few rotating modes, an AI generator that cannot work from uploaded material and a game style that can feel competitive for some classes. Kahoot is the best-known live quiz tool. Blooket offers similar cash-and-power-up games with a lower Plus price. Quizlet focuses on flashcards and study modes. Wayground, formerly Quizizz, adds lessons and AI. Choose Gimkit if you want review games that reward strategy and keep every student answering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gimkit free?

Yes. Gimkit Basic is free and lets teachers create kits and host live games with a rotating selection of about three free game modes. New accounts get a 14-day Pro trial. Gimkit Pro costs $14.99 a month or $59.88 a year and opens every game mode, Assignments and audio questions.

Can Gimkit make questions with AI?

Yes. Since August 2025 the kit editor has a Generate with AI option. You type a prompt, choose a grade level from Pre-K to University, and it returns 10 to 30 questions to add or regenerate. It works from the prompt only and cannot read a PDF, slide deck or video.

Do students need accounts for Gimkit?

No. Students join a live game by entering a game code at gimkit.com/join on any device with a web browser. Accounts are optional for students, though teachers can connect classes for Assignments and reporting. This makes Gimkit quick to start in classrooms with shared or younger students' devices.

How much does Gimkit cost for a school?

Gimkit lists group plans for departments and schools. The Department plan costs $650 a year for up to 20 teachers, and the School plan costs $1,000 a year. Both give Pro access to every teacher added, and Gimkit accepts purchase orders for group plans.

Gimkit or Blooket, which is better?

Both turn quizzes into games with in-game rewards. Gimkit leans on strategy, with cash, upgrades, 2D map modes and KitCollab for student questions. Blooket has a larger set of casual game modes, collectible characters and a cheaper Plus plan at $4.99 a month billed yearly. Many teachers rotate between the two.
