Nearpod Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)
Interactive K-12 lessons with live quizzes, games and AI-generated lesson drafts
Last updated: October 26, 2026
What is Nearpod?
Nearpod is an interactive lesson platform for K-12 teachers, owned by Renaissance. Teachers run slides, videos, polls, quizzes and games that students join on their own devices, live or at their own pace. AI Create generates questions and, on school licenses, full lessons. A free Silver plan covers 40 students per session; Gold costs $159 a year.
Nearpod was founded in Miami in 2012 by Guido Kovalskys, Emiliano Abramzon and Felipe Sommer, and Renaissance Learning acquired it in 2021 for about $650 million. Renaissance, which also owns Star Assessments, Freckle and Lalilo, sells Nearpod to schools and districts across the US and abroad. The core idea is that a teacher's presentation becomes interactive: students join with a code on a laptop, tablet or phone, and every slide can carry a question, drawing prompt, poll or activity. Teachers see each student's responses in real time and get reports afterward. Nearpod's library holds more than 22,000 ready-made lessons, videos and activities, many built with partners.
Lessons combine content slides, videos, web pages, virtual field trips and 3D objects with more than 20 activity types, including open-ended questions, polls, quizzes, Draw It, Collaborate boards, Matching Pairs, Drag and Drop and Time to Climb, a gamified quiz race. Teachers can import PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides files, or build lessons through a Google Slides add-on. Lessons run in Live mode, where the teacher controls pacing, or Student-Paced mode for homework and absences. Interactive Videos insert questions into YouTube clips or Nearpod's library. School licenses add math and social studies programs, virtual manipulatives, co-teaching and LMS integrations.
Nearpod AI Create covers several tools. The Question Generator writes multiple-choice questions from a topic or lesson content for checks for understanding, exit tickets and Time to Climb. The Lesson Generator builds a complete interactive lesson from a topic, standard or learning objective, using backward design and Universal Design for Learning principles. An Activity Generator adds activities to existing lessons, and a Text Leveler rewrites lesson text to a target reading level. Nearpod says AI Create runs on OpenAI's GPT-4o mini with its own safety prompts and checks, that it does not use teacher data to train models, and that teachers must review content before students see it.
Individual teachers can use Silver free, with 40 students per session, limited storage and core lesson features, plus five free AI question sets. Gold costs $159 a year and adds 1 GB of storage, 75 students per session, the full Question Generator, the Google Slides add-on, Drag and Drop and Sub Plans. Platinum costs $397 a year and raises limits to 5 GB and 90 students, with student notes. School and District licenses are priced by quote and include the Lesson Generator, Activity Generator and Text Leveler, 250 students per session, more storage, rostering, admin reporting and a dedicated customer success manager.
Nearpod's strength is turning existing slides into lessons with formative assessment and data. Its drawbacks are that the best AI features are locked to school licenses, and that teachers report students drifting off-task on devices without classroom management tools. Pear Deck, owned by GoGuardian, offers similar interactive slides inside Google Slides and PowerPoint. Kahoot! and Quizizz, now Wayground, focus on game-based quizzes. MagicSchool and Brisk generate lesson materials but do not deliver them live. Diffit levels reading texts. Choose Nearpod if your school wants interactive lessons, real-time student data and a large standards-aligned library in one platform.
