Final Cut Pro Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Apple's pro video editor for Mac and iPad, with on-device AI search, captions and masking

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Final Cut Pro?

Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional video editor for Mac and iPad, built around the Magnetic Timeline. Recent versions add on-device AI tools: Visual Search, Transcript Search, Generate Captions, Auto Mask, Magnetic Mask and Match Color. The Mac app sells for a one-time $299.99, or comes in the Apple Creator Studio subscription at $12.99 a month or $129 a year.

Final Cut Pro is Apple's flagship video editing app. The current Mac generation began as Final Cut Pro X in 2011, a ground-up rewrite that replaced track-based editing with the Magnetic Timeline, where clips slide together and stay in sync as you trim and rearrange them. The redesign drew complaints from film and TV editors at the time, but the app has since become a common choice for YouTubers, documentary makers, wedding videographers and corporate video teams on the Mac. A separate Final Cut Pro for iPad arrived in 2023. Version 12 of the Mac app arrived in January 2026, and version 12.4 shipped on September 29, 2026.

Core editing covers multicam, compound clips, roles for organizing audio, 360-degree and spatial video, HDR, ProRes and ProRes RAW, and native support for footage from iPhone, Canon, Sony and other cameras. Motion and Compressor, sold separately or in Creator Studio, handle motion graphics and delivery encoding. Apple silicon Macs render quickly thanks to hardware media engines. Libraries hold events and projects together, and Smart Collections, keywords and ratings help organize large shoots. FCPXML export moves timelines to DaVinci Resolve for color grading or to audio tools, and Final Cut Camera on iPhone can feed live multicam angles into Final Cut Pro for iPad.

Apple has added AI features that run on device. Version 12.0 brought Transcript Search, which finds spoken phrases by exact match or meaning, and Visual Search, which finds objects and actions from a text description, plus Beat Detection for cutting to music. Version 12.3, in June 2026, added Generate Captions in US English, Auto Mask for isolating skin, sky, hair, foliage and clothing without manual tracking, a rebuilt Match Color, and Edit Detection, which splits a rendered video back into clips. Older tools include Magnetic Mask, Object Tracker, Smart Conform for reframing, Enhance Light and Color, and Smooth Slo-Mo. Most of these require Apple silicon.

Final Cut Pro for Mac costs $299.99 as a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, and Apple has historically delivered major updates to existing buyers at no extra charge. Since January 2026 it is also part of Apple Creator Studio, a subscription that bundles Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage on Mac and iPad for $12.99 a month or $129 a year, with a one-month free trial. College students and educators pay $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Up to six family members can share Creator Studio. A 90-day free trial of the Mac app is also offered.

Final Cut Pro's strengths are speed on Apple silicon, a timeline that suits fast-turnaround work, private on-device AI and a one-time price that undercuts subscriptions over time. Its limits are that it runs only on Apple hardware, collaboration is weaker than Premiere Pro's Team Projects, and some film and TV workflows still expect Avid. Adobe Premiere Pro runs on Windows and Mac with Firefly generative tools. DaVinci Resolve has a strong free version and top color grading. CapCut and Descript suit social and text-based editing. Choose Final Cut Pro if you edit on a Mac and want fast, private AI assistance without a monthly fee.

Who is Final Cut Pro best for?

  • Mac-based YouTubers and documentary editors who want fast turnaround.
  • Editors who prefer a one-time purchase over a subscription.
  • Teams shooting on iPhone that want on-device AI search and captions.
  • Creators editing across Mac and iPad with Creator Studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Final Cut Pro cost?

Final Cut Pro for Mac is a one-time $299.99 purchase on the Mac App Store, with a 90-day free trial. It is also included in Apple Creator Studio, which costs $12.99 a month or $129 a year and adds Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage, plus the iPad versions. Students pay $2.99 a month.

What AI features does Final Cut Pro have?

Final Cut Pro includes Visual Search and Transcript Search for finding moments in footage, Generate Captions for automatic subtitles, Auto Mask and Magnetic Mask for isolating subjects, Match Color, Edit Detection, Beat Detection, Object Tracker, Smart Conform and Enhance Light and Color. Apple says these run on device, and most require Apple silicon.

Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro, which is better?

Final Cut Pro is faster on Apple silicon, costs a one-time $299.99 and keeps AI processing on device, which suits solo Mac editors. Premiere Pro runs on Windows and Mac, integrates with After Effects and Adobe Firefly generative tools, and has stronger team collaboration, but requires a subscription. Many agencies standardize on Premiere for cross-platform work.

Is Final Cut Pro available on Windows?

No. Final Cut Pro runs only on macOS and iPadOS, and Apple has not announced a Windows version. Windows users usually choose Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut instead. Final Cut Pro can export FCPXML, which DaVinci Resolve imports, so projects can move between the two when teams use mixed platforms.

Is Final Cut Pro a one-time purchase or a subscription?

Both options exist. The Mac version is still sold as a one-time $299.99 purchase. Since January 2026, Apple also offers Apple Creator Studio, a subscription that includes Final Cut Pro for Mac and iPad with other pro apps. On iPad, Final Cut Pro is available through a subscription rather than a one-time purchase.
