DaVinci Resolve Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Free pro editor and color grader, with on-device AI tools in the $295 Studio version

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is DaVinci Resolve?

DaVinci Resolve is Blackmagic Design's all-in-one editor for cutting, color grading, visual effects, motion graphics and audio. Independent editors, colorists and YouTubers use it because the free version has no watermark. DaVinci Resolve Studio, a $295 one-time purchase, adds the Neural Engine AI tools, 10-bit and high-frame-rate export, and noise reduction.

DaVinci Resolve began as a high-end color grading system that Blackmagic Design acquired in 2009, and it has grown into a full post-production suite for Windows, macOS and Linux, with an iPad version. It combines separate pages for media, cut, edit, Fusion visual effects, color, Fairlight audio and delivery in one app. Hollywood colorists have long used it for grading, and its free tier has made it a common first editor for students and YouTubers. DaVinci Resolve 21 was released on June 3, 2026, after a beta that began at NAB in April. Its headline addition is a Photo page that applies Resolve's color tools to still images, plus more than 100 new motion graphics effects.

A project moves left to right through the pages. Footage is organized on the media page, cut quickly on the cut page or in detail on the edit timeline, then passed to Fusion for compositing, the color page for node-based grading, and Fairlight for mixing and sound design. Collaboration lets several editors, colorists and audio engineers work on the same project at once through a shared database or Blackmagic Cloud. Hardware panels, from editor keyboards to full Fairlight consoles, plug into the same workflow. Because one file covers every stage, there is no round-tripping between separate apps as there is between Premiere, After Effects and Audition.

AI features run on the DaVinci Neural Engine, which processes on your own GPU rather than in the cloud, so there are no credits or uploads. Long-standing tools include Magic Mask for object isolation, Speed Warp retiming, SuperScale upscaling, Voice Isolation, face recognition for sorting clips, and text-based editing from transcripts. Resolve 21 added IntelliSearch for finding clips by describing faces, objects or dialogue, CineFocus for synthetic depth of field and rack focus, Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper, Blemish Removal, UltraSharpen, Motion Deblur, SlateID for reading clapperboards, and a Speech Generator that can clone a voice from about 10 seconds of audio. These Neural Engine features require Studio.

The free version of DaVinci Resolve has no watermark or time limit. It exports most 8-bit formats at up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 and 60 frames per second, and includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading. DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295 once, with free upgrades so far: owners of earlier Studio versions moved to 21 at no charge. Studio adds the Neural Engine AI tools, temporal and spatial noise reduction, 10-bit export at up to 120 frames per second, resolutions beyond 4K, extra Resolve FX and Fairlight plugins, and multiple GPUs. A Studio license comes free with Blackmagic cinema cameras, and one key activates on two computers.

Resolve's drawbacks are hardware demands and a learning curve. It leans heavily on the GPU, and long-GOP footage from phones can stutter on modest laptops without proxy files. The node-based color page and Fusion's node graph take time to learn. Adobe Premiere fits editors tied to After Effects, Photoshop and Frame.io, and offers generative tools such as Generative Extend that Resolve does not. Final Cut Pro is faster on Apple Silicon and costs $299 once, but runs only on Macs. CapCut is quicker for short social clips. Pick Resolve if you want professional editing and grading without a subscription, or if color work matters most.

Who is DaVinci Resolve best for?

  • Independent editors who want professional software without a subscription.
  • Colorists who need node-based grading and HDR tools.
  • Teams that edit, grade and mix in one shared project.
  • Editors who want AI tools that run offline on local hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DaVinci Resolve free?

Yes. The free version of DaVinci Resolve has no watermark, trial period or account requirement. It handles editing, color, Fusion effects and Fairlight audio, exports up to Ultra HD at 60 frames per second and supports multi-user collaboration. The paid Studio version adds AI tools, noise reduction, 10-bit and higher-resolution output.

How much does DaVinci Resolve Studio cost?

DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295 as a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Upgrades have been free, so owners of earlier Studio versions moved to version 21 at no cost. One license key activates on two computers. Blackmagic includes a Studio license with its cinema cameras, which many buyers use instead of paying separately.

DaVinci Resolve or Premiere, which should I use?

Resolve suits editors who want no subscription, top-tier color grading and editing, effects and audio in one app. Adobe Premiere suits editors who rely on After Effects, Photoshop and Frame.io, and who want generative tools such as Generative Extend. Premiere's single-app plan costs $22.99 a month, while Resolve Studio is $295 once.

Do DaVinci Resolve's AI tools upload my footage?

No. The DaVinci Neural Engine runs AI features such as Magic Mask, IntelliSearch, Voice Isolation and SuperScale on your own GPU, so footage stays on your machine and there are no generation credits. Blackmagic Cloud is optional and used only if you choose cloud project sharing or collaboration.

Can I use the free version of DaVinci Resolve commercially?

Yes. Blackmagic Design allows commercial work with the free version, and exported videos carry no watermark. Limits are technical rather than legal: no Neural Engine AI tools, 8-bit output, Ultra HD maximum resolution and 60 frames per second. Studio removes those limits for a one-time $295 payment.
