Professional timeline editor with Generative Extend, AI search and object masking

rebranded: Adobe renamed Premiere Pro to Adobe Premiere with the 26.0 release in January 2026. The desktop app, project files and plans carried over unchanged.

What is Adobe Premiere?

Adobe Premiere, called Premiere Pro until January 2026, is a professional nonlinear video editor for film, broadcast and YouTube work. It adds Firefly-powered Generative Extend, Media Intelligence search, transcript editing and AI Object Mask to a standard timeline. The single-app plan costs $22.99 a month on an annual contract, with 25 generative credits.

Premiere is Adobe's nonlinear video editor, launched as Premiere in 1991 and sold as Premiere Pro from 2003 until Adobe dropped the "Pro" with version 26.0 in January 2026. It runs on Windows and macOS, with a free companion app on iPhone. Premiere sits alongside DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer as one of the main professional editors, and Adobe said 85 percent of films premiering at Sundance 2026 were made with Creative Cloud apps. The current release is Premiere 26.5, shipped in September 2026. Its main advantage is integration: After Effects, Audition, Photoshop and Frame.io review all connect to the same project, which matters to teams that already pay for Creative Cloud.

Editing follows a familiar pattern: import footage, build a sequence on the timeline, add titles, effects and audio, then export. Text-Based Editing transcribes clips on import so editors can cut by deleting or rearranging words, and Paper Edit, added in 26.5, assembles a rough cut from sentences picked in the transcript. Media Intelligence powers a Search panel where you describe a shot in plain language, such as "close-up of hands on a keyboard", and Premiere finds matching clips across a project. Enhance Speech cleans dialogue, Remix retimes music to the edit, and Caption Translation localizes captions into 27 languages. AI Object Mask, introduced in late 2025, isolates and tracks a moving subject with a hover and click.

Generative features run on Adobe's Firefly Video Model. Generative Extend, generally available since April 2025, adds frames and ambient sound to the start or end of a clip, now at resolutions from 360p to 4K and in any aspect ratio. Premiere 26.5 added generative media inside the app, creating clips and sound effects from text through Firefly or partner models; Adobe's partner roster includes Runway, Kling, Luma, Google Veo and ElevenLabs. Firefly Boards storyboards can be imported straight into a sequence. An AI Assistant chat panel, in public beta since June 2026, can organize bins, rename clips, add markers, sync multicam footage and assemble rough cuts on request.

The Premiere single-app plan costs $22.99 a month on an annual contract billed monthly and includes Frame.io for Creative Cloud, Adobe Express Premium, 100GB of storage and 25 generative credits a month. Twenty-five credits does not stretch far, because video generation is a premium feature priced by duration and model. Creative Cloud Pro at $69.99 a month adds After Effects, Photoshop and more than 20 other apps, plus 4,000 premium credits, which Adobe says covers about 40 five-second video generations. Month-to-month billing costs more, and students and teachers pay $19.99 a month for Creative Cloud Pro in the first year. The iPhone app is free, with paid upgrades.

Premiere's drawbacks are its subscription-only pricing and a reputation for crashes and slow playback on long or effects-heavy projects. DaVinci Resolve offers a free version with professional color grading and a $295 one-time Studio license, which makes it the main rival for independent editors. Final Cut Pro is faster on Apple Silicon and costs $299 once, but runs only on macOS. CapCut and Descript are quicker for short social clips and talking-head edits. Premiere fits editors who already work in After Effects or Photoshop, teams reviewing cuts in Frame.io, and agencies whose clients send Premiere projects. Pick Resolve instead if cost or color work matters most.

Who is Adobe Premiere best for?

  • Editors who move projects between Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop.
  • Teams that review cuts and collect client notes in Frame.io.
  • Documentary and interview editors who cut from transcripts.
  • Editors searching large footage libraries with plain-language queries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Adobe Premiere cost?

The Premiere single-app plan costs $22.99 a month on an annual contract billed monthly, with 25 generative credits and Frame.io. Creative Cloud Pro costs $69.99 a month and adds After Effects, Photoshop and 4,000 premium generative credits. Month-to-month billing costs more. Students and teachers pay $19.99 a month for Creative Cloud Pro in the first year.

Is Premiere Pro free?

No. The desktop app requires a subscription after a free trial. Adobe's Premiere app for iPhone is free to download and use, with paid upgrades for extra storage and generative credits. Editors who need free professional desktop software usually choose DaVinci Resolve, which has a free version with no watermark.

Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, which is better?

Premiere suits editors already using After Effects, Photoshop or Frame.io, and it leads on generative tools like Generative Extend and AI search. DaVinci Resolve has stronger color grading, a free version and a $295 one-time Studio license. Resolve also bundles Fusion effects and Fairlight audio. Cost-conscious editors and colorists tend to pick Resolve.

Does Adobe use my Premiere footage to train AI?

Adobe says it does not train its Firefly generative models on customers' personal content stored in Creative Cloud, and that Firefly trains on licensed and public domain material. Account privacy settings let you opt out of content analysis for product improvement. Partner models used through Premiere run under Adobe's agreements with those companies.

Can I use Generative Extend footage commercially?

Adobe describes Firefly Video Model output, including Generative Extend, as designed for commercial use, and certain enterprise agreements add IP indemnification for Firefly content. Clips generated with partner models are labeled and fall outside that indemnity. Standard rights for the footage, music and people in your project still apply.
