What is Manage AI?

Manage AI is Clio's generative AI feature set inside Clio Manage, built for law firms that want matter management, billing, deadlines, and client communication in one system. Manage AI is Clio's generative AI feature set inside Clio Manage, the company's cloud-based legal practice-management platform. Clio introduced the predecessor, Clio Duo, in October 2023 and said it would become available in 2024. Clio says its platform is used by more than 400,000 legal professionals, while the 2023 announcement cited more than 150,000. The current product combines matter, contact, document, calendar, time, expense, billing, and client-communication records in one workspace. That positioning makes Manage AI an operational assistant rather than a standalone legal chatbot. It is aimed at firms that already organize their work in Clio, because its useful context comes from records held in Clio Manage. Clio's current pages use Manage AI, while older coverage may use Clio Duo.

Manage AI handles routine actions tied to a firm's existing records. Its AI launchpad can schedule events from documents, automate bills, analyze documents, answer questions about matters and firm operations, create time entries, expenses, tasks, and events, summarize recent matter activity, and assist with emails and other documents. Matter action cards can propose document review, client communications, bills ready for approval, and calendar events. The Catch up widget summarizes recent activity without requiring users to open each matter section. A typical workflow is review, approval, and then filing, sending, or billing. Clio's product pages describe court-document date extraction, draft invoices, and client updates. The workflow reduces manual entry, but the lawyer or staff member remains responsible for checking output before it reaches a client or court.

Clio's October 2023 announcement described Duo as a proprietary generative AI capability built into Clio's platform and promised an audit log for AI activity. Current Manage AI documentation says the AI Event Log stores timestamps, users, and event descriptions for the previous 90 days, with additional details available in the interface. Clio says Manage AI follows existing Clio Manage permissions, does not expose matters a user cannot access, and does not use customer data to train external AI models. The documentation also says processing may occur on servers outside a firm's home jurisdiction, while resulting data remains stored in the firm's region. Manage AI is separate from Clio Work, which Clio positions for matter-based legal research, document analysis, cited drafting, and docket activity.

Clio's current pricing page lists four plans. Starter begins at $49/user/month and includes core practice management, but its feature table excludes AI features. Core includes Starter features plus AI billing, document-to-calendar actions, AI-generated client updates, and other AI functions. Signature adds unlimited custom roles and permissions, matter stages, AI-generated reporting, multi-currency billing, and split billing. Elite adds Clio Grow's client-acquisition features. Clio does not publish dollar prices for Core, Signature, or Elite on the page, and it does not list a separate Manage AI fee. The page also lists optional add-ons, including Clio Grow and Clio for Personal Injury. Firms can disable firm-level AI access, although Clio says firms whose license includes AI may need to contact support about their options.

Manage AI's main constraint is its dependence on Clio's records and workflow. It is less suitable for firms seeking a specialist contract-review tool, a standalone legal research database, or local deployment. Compared with Kira, whose job overlap is contract analysis and provision extraction, Manage AI focuses on practice operations. Compared with Harvey, the overlap is generative legal assistance, but Manage AI is tied more closely to matter administration, billing, and deadlines. Compared with Spellbook, the overlap is drafting support, while Spellbook's job is centered on Microsoft Word. Clio Work is the closer in-company alternative for cited research and matter-based legal drafting. Pick Manage AI if your firm already uses Clio Manage and wants reviewable automation around daily matter operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Manage AI cost?

Clio does not list a separate Manage AI fee. Clio's current pricing page starts Clio Manage at $49 per user each month for Starter, while AI features are included in Core and higher plans. Clio does not publish dollar prices for Core, Signature, or Elite on that page, so a firm's total depends on its selected plan and configuration.

Is there a free Manage AI plan?

Clio does not publish a free Manage AI plan. Its pricing page offers a free trial and starts paid Clio Manage pricing at $49 per user each month for Starter, but AI features are included in Core and above. Firms should confirm trial availability, eligibility, and the exact AI-enabled quote with Clio.

How does Manage AI compare with Kira?

Manage AI automates practice administration inside Clio, including deadlines, bills, matter summaries, and client updates. Kira has overlapping legal AI use cases centered on contract analysis and provision extraction. A general practice-management firm is a closer fit for Manage AI, while a transaction team focused on contract review should evaluate Kira.

Does Clio use customer data to train external AI models?

Clio says Manage AI follows existing Clio Manage permissions and does not use customer data to train external AI models. Its documentation also says queries may be processed on servers outside a firm's home jurisdiction, while resulting data remains stored in the firm's region. Firms remain responsible for their own legal, regulatory, and data-residency decisions.

Can lawyers use Manage AI for client work?

Manage AI can draft client updates, emails, and other documents, and it can prepare bills and calendar events from matter information. Clio describes these as reviewable actions. Users remain responsible for checking accuracy, privilege, confidentiality, and compliance before sending or filing anything. The product supports professional work but does not replace legal judgment.
