Anytype Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Local-first, encrypted workspace for notes, databases and chat, with an MCP server for AI

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Anytype?

Anytype is a local-first, end-to-end encrypted workspace for notes, databases, projects and team chat, built around objects, types and relations. Data lives on your devices and syncs peer to peer or through Anytype's network. It has no built-in AI assistant but offers an official MCP server for Claude and other tools. The app is free; paid plans add remote storage from $4 a month.

Anytype is made by the Any Association, a Swiss-registered organization with its team based largely in Berlin, and it launched publicly in 2023 after a long beta. It positions itself as a privacy-first alternative to Notion: instead of storing your workspace on a company server, Anytype keeps data on your devices, encrypts it with keys only you hold, and syncs changes peer to peer on local networks or through its own sync network called any-sync. The source code is available on GitHub under the Any Source Available License, which permits personal and non-commercial use and self-hosting. Apps run on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, and work fully offline.

Everything in Anytype is an object, such as a page, task, person or book, and each object has a type with its own properties, called relations. Users can define custom types, then build sets and collections that show objects as tables, Kanban boards, galleries, lists, calendars or a graph view of links. The block editor handles text, checklists, tables, images, files, code and embeds. Spaces can be private or shared with Owner, Editor and Viewer roles, and chats inside spaces let teams message and share objects. Templates from the community gallery cover journals, CRMs and project trackers, and pages can be published to the web.

Anytype does not ship a built-in AI writing assistant or chat as of late 2026, and competitors such as Capacities point to this gap. Instead, Anytype offers an official MCP server and a local API, which let Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients search, create, update and organize objects in your spaces from outside the app. This keeps AI optional and lets users choose their own model, including local models. Because data is encrypted on device, any AI processing happens only when you connect a tool and grant access. The team has said native AI is on its roadmap.

The Anytype app is free, with unlimited local storage. Network plans cover remote backup and sync. Free includes 100 MB of remote storage, 10 shared spaces and unlimited private spaces. Plus costs $4 a month on annual billing and gives 1 GB of storage with unlimited shared spaces, Pro costs $8 a month for 10 GB, and Ultra costs $16 a month for 100 GB. Third-party trackers report monthly billing at $5, $10 and $20 since August 2026. Higher tiers also include shorter ANY ID names. Anytype for Business adds SSO and an admin panel per editor, with self-hosting listed at a flat monthly fee.

Anytype's appeal is ownership: offline speed, end-to-end encryption, no lock-in to a company server, and a flexible object model. Its drawbacks are a learning curve around types and relations, a small free sync allowance, fewer integrations than Notion and no native AI. Notion is the main hosted alternative, with Notion AI and a large template library. Obsidian is local-first with Markdown files and plugins, including AI plugins. Capacities offers a similar object model with built-in AI, and AppFlowy and Logseq are open-source options. Choose Anytype if privacy and offline access matter most and you are happy to connect AI through MCP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anytype free?

Yes. The Anytype app is free with unlimited local storage, 100 MB of remote backup, 10 shared spaces and unlimited private spaces. Paid network plans add remote storage: Plus at $4 a month, Pro at $8 and Ultra at $16 on annual billing, with higher monthly rates reported since August 2026.

Does Anytype have AI?

Anytype has no built-in AI assistant as of late 2026. It offers an official MCP server and local API, which let Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients search, create and edit objects in your spaces. You choose the model, including local models. The team lists native AI features on its roadmap.

Anytype or Notion, which is better?

Anytype suits users who want local-first, end-to-end encrypted data that works offline and is not stored on a company server. Notion is hosted, easier to share on the web, has more integrations and includes Notion AI. Teams that need fast onboarding and built-in AI usually prefer Notion; privacy-focused users prefer Anytype.

Is Anytype open source?

Anytype publishes its source code on GitHub under the Any Source Available License, which allows personal use, modification and self-hosting but restricts some commercial uses, so it is source-available rather than OSI open source. Its any-sync protocol lets users self-host backup and sync nodes instead of using Anytype's network.

Is Anytype secure?

Anytype encrypts data on your device with keys derived from a recovery phrase that only you hold, and syncs encrypted changes peer to peer or through its network. The company says it cannot read your content. Losing the recovery phrase means losing access, since Anytype cannot reset it for you.
