Adobe After Effects Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Industry-standard motion graphics and VFX app with AI Roto Brush and an AI Assistant

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Adobe After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is the industry-standard desktop app for motion graphics, animated titles and visual effects in film, TV, advertising and online video. AI features include Roto Brush for separating subjects, Content-Aware Fill for removing objects and a new AI Assistant in public beta. It costs $22.99 a month alone, with 500 monthly generative credits.

After Effects first shipped in 1993 and has been an Adobe product since the mid-1990s. It is the standard tool for motion designers, video editors, visual effects artists, animators and broadcast designers who create animated titles, logo reveals, lower thirds, explainer animations, compositing and effects for film, TV, advertising, social media and YouTube. It runs on Windows and Mac, including native support for Windows on ARM since the January 2026 release, and works closely with Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator. Most motion design courses teach it, and a large market of templates, plugins and scripts, from Red Giant to Video Copilot, extends it.

After Effects works with layered compositions on a timeline, with keyframes, graph editor curves, masks, shape layers, text animators, expressions written in JavaScript, and hundreds of built-in effects. A true 3D workspace with the Advanced 3D renderer lets you mix 3D models and 2D graphics, and the 26.0 release added parametric meshes, Substance 3D materials and shadow-casting lights. Motion tracking and camera tracking attach elements to moving footage, keying tools replace green screens, and Motion Graphics templates package animations for editing in Premiere Pro. The January 2026 update also added SVG import as editable shapes, variable font animation and lossless compressed playback.

Adobe's AI in After Effects focuses on time-consuming tasks. Roto Brush uses AI to select and separate subjects from backgrounds across frames, including hair and transparent elements. Content-Aware Fill removes unwanted objects such as boom mics or passersby and fills the gaps in every frame. In September 2026 Adobe released an AI Assistant in public beta that works across a whole project: you describe a task in plain language, and it can reorganize projects with thousands of layers, fix technical issues, write expressions without coding and inspect compositions and footage. Plans include generative credits for Adobe Firefly features across Creative Cloud.

After Effects is sold by subscription. The single-app plan costs $22.99 a month in the US and includes Adobe Express Premium, Frame.io for Creative Cloud, 100 GB of cloud storage, fonts, tutorials and 500 monthly generative credits. The Creative Cloud All Apps plan, listed at $59.99 a month on the After Effects page, adds Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition and more than 20 other apps with 1,000 monthly generative credits. Students, teachers and businesses get separate pricing. A free trial is available, but there is no free plan, and Adobe's annual plans billed monthly carry early cancellation fees.

After Effects' strengths are unmatched depth for motion graphics and compositing, a huge base of tutorials, templates and plugins, tight integration with Premiere Pro and other Adobe apps, and AI that speeds rotoscoping, cleanup and project management. Its weaknesses are a steep learning curve, heavy hardware demands, slow previews on complex projects and subscription-only pricing. DaVinci Resolve's Fusion page offers node-based compositing free. Cavalry is a modern procedural motion design app. Rive and LottieFiles suit interactive and app animation. Canva and CapCut handle simple animated social content. Choose After Effects if you do professional motion graphics or visual effects work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does After Effects cost?

After Effects costs $22.99 a month as a single app in the US, including Adobe Express Premium, 100 GB of storage and 500 monthly generative credits. The Creative Cloud All Apps plan, listed at $59.99 a month on the After Effects page, adds more than 20 apps. Students, teachers and businesses get separate pricing.

What AI features are in After Effects?

After Effects includes AI-powered Roto Brush for separating subjects from backgrounds and Content-Aware Fill for removing objects from video. In September 2026 Adobe added an AI Assistant in public beta that reorganizes projects, fixes technical issues, writes expressions and inspects compositions from plain-language requests.

Is there a free version of After Effects?

No. After Effects is available only by subscription, though Adobe offers a free trial. Free alternatives include DaVinci Resolve, whose Fusion page handles compositing and motion graphics, and Blender for 3D animation. Simple animated graphics can also be made in Canva's free plan.

After Effects or Premiere Pro, what is the difference?

Premiere Pro is a video editor for cutting footage, arranging clips, adding audio and color correcting full projects. After Effects is for motion graphics, compositing and visual effects on shorter shots. Editors often build titles and effects in After Effects and bring them into Premiere Pro through Dynamic Link or templates.

Can After Effects export Lottie animations?

Yes, through plugins. Designers commonly export After Effects animations to the lightweight Lottie format using the Bodymovin plugin or the LottieFiles plugin, which also offers previews and hosting. Not every After Effects feature is supported in Lottie, so animations for apps should stick to vector shapes and supported effects.
