Mem0 Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Open source memory layer that lets AI agents and apps remember users across sessions

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Mem0?

Mem0 is a memory layer for AI agents and apps. It extracts facts and preferences from conversations, stores them, updates them when they change and retrieves the relevant ones for each new prompt. The Apache 2.0 open source library runs anywhere, and the managed platform is free up to set monthly limits, with custom plans for production volume.

Mem0, pronounced mem-zero, launched in January 2024 and went through Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch. It was founded by Taranjeet Singh and Deshraj Yadav and is based in San Francisco. In October 2025 it announced $24 million across a seed round led by Kindred Ventures and a Series A led by Basis Set Ventures, with Peak XV Partners, GitHub Fund and Y Combinator taking part. Its users are developers building chatbots, copilots, support agents, tutors and companion apps that need to remember people over time. The GitHub repository has passed 60,000 stars, and Mem0 reported 14 million Python package downloads at the time of its funding.

Large language models forget everything between sessions unless an app sends the history back each time, which wastes tokens and still misses older details. Mem0 handles this with a simple API: an app calls add with a conversation and a user ID, and Mem0 uses an LLM to extract memories such as preferences, facts and plans, sort them and resolve conflicts with older memories. On each new request the app calls search, and Mem0 returns the memories that matter for that prompt. Memories can be scoped to a user, a session or an agent. Mem0 says its design combines vector, graph and key-value stores.

Developers can self-host the open source library in Python or TypeScript with their own vector database and LLM, or use the managed Mem0 Platform through its API and SDKs. OpenMemory is a local, private memory server that works through the Model Context Protocol, so tools such as Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can share one memory store. Mem0 also offers an MCP integration, a gateway and a command line tool. CrewAI, Flowise and Langflow integrate Mem0 natively, it works with LangChain and LlamaIndex, and Mem0 says AWS chose it as the exclusive memory provider for the AWS Agent SDK, known as Strands.

Mem0's managed platform has two plans. Free covers unlimited end users; for the first 30 days it includes 10,000 adds and 1,000 retrievals a month with model calls paid by Mem0, and after that, with your own LLM key, it allows 50,000 adds and 10,000 retrievals a month. Usage past those limits is billed by usage with a monthly cap you set. Custom plans add limits sized to your volume, graph memory with entity linking, user profiles, Dream memory consolidation, advanced analytics, private Slack support, SSO, audit logs, an SLA and on-premises deployment. The open source library is free under Apache 2.0.

Mem0's strengths are a small API that adds long-term memory in a few lines of code, an Apache 2.0 open source core, a generous free tier, OpenMemory for MCP tools and wide framework support. Its weaknesses are extra LLM calls and latency for memory extraction, quality that depends on the model you pick, and advanced features such as graph memory reserved for custom plans. Letta, formerly MemGPT, builds agents around self-editing memory. Zep focuses on temporal knowledge graphs. LangChain and LlamaIndex include their own memory modules. Choose Mem0 if you want a drop-in memory layer that works with any model or framework.

Who is Mem0 best for?

  • Developers adding memory to chatbots.
  • Support agents recalling past tickets.
  • Personal assistants and companion apps.
  • Sharing memory across MCP tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mem0 free?

Yes. The open source library is free under Apache 2.0. The managed platform's Free plan covers unlimited end users and, with your own LLM key, 50,000 adds and 10,000 retrievals a month, with usage billing and a cap you set beyond that. Custom plans add graph memory, SSO, an SLA and on-premises deployment.

How does Mem0 work?

Your app sends conversations to Mem0 with a user ID. Mem0 uses an LLM to pull out memories such as preferences and facts, updates older memories when they conflict and stores them. On each new request, your app searches Mem0 and adds the relevant memories to the prompt, so the model remembers the user.

What is OpenMemory?

OpenMemory is Mem0's local memory server for the Model Context Protocol. It runs on your machine and lets MCP clients such as Claude, Cursor and other tools read and write one shared memory store, so context you give one assistant can be used by another while the data stays local.

Who invested in Mem0?

Mem0 announced $24 million in October 2025. Kindred Ventures led the seed round and Basis Set Ventures led the Series A, with Peak XV Partners, GitHub Fund and Y Combinator taking part. Angel investors include Scott Belsky, Dharmesh Shah and the CEOs of Datadog, Supabase and PostHog.

Mem0 or Letta, which should I use?

Mem0 is a memory layer you add to an existing app or agent framework through an API call. Letta, formerly MemGPT, is a full agent framework and server where agents manage their own memory blocks. Pick Mem0 to add memory to code you already have, Letta to build stateful agents from scratch.
