Blooket logo Blooket in brief

Blooket launched in 2018 and became one of the most popular review game tools in K-12 classrooms, used by teachers, tutors and students who host games for friends. It works like a quiz app wrapped in arcade-style games: students answer questions on their own devices, then use the points they earn in a mini game, such as defending a tower, running a factory or stealing gold from classmates. Students collect cartoon characters called Blooks by opening packs with in-game tokens, which keeps them coming back. Students join with a game ID in a browser, and teachers can host live games or assign the same sets as self-paced homework.

Teachers build question sets with multiple choice and typing questions, images and time limits, or search a large library of public sets made by other teachers. Sets can be imported from Quizlet or a spreadsheet. Game modes include Gold Quest, Tower Defense, Cafe, Factory, Crypto Hack, Fishing Frenzy, Racing and seasonal modes, with some reserved for paid plans. Live games show a leaderboard on the teacher's screen, and homework mode lets students play on their own until a deadline. Reports show each student's accuracy by question, which helps teachers spot topics the class missed, and Plus adds more detailed reports.

Blooket's strengths are highly engaging game modes, collectible Blooks, an easy free tier with room for 60 players, a low-cost Plus plan, Quizlet import and free AI question sets through Khanmigo. Its weaknesses are game mechanics that can reward luck over knowledge, a reliance on an outside tool for AI generation and distraction concerns for some classes. Gimkit adds deeper strategy and its own AI generator. Kahoot is the classic live quiz show format. Quizlet focuses on flashcards. Wayground, formerly Quizizz, offers AI lesson tools. Choose Blooket if you want fun, flexible review games that students ask to play.

Gimkit logo Gimkit in brief

Gimkit began as a high school project by Josh Feinsilber, who wanted a review game that held students' attention longer than standard quiz apps. The company says it has no ads and no outside investors. Its users are K-12 teachers, tutors and some college instructors who run live review sessions, homework practice and test prep. Students join with a game code on any device with a browser, and they do not need accounts to play. The core idea separates Gimkit from Kahoot: instead of racing to answer first, students earn virtual cash for correct answers and spend it on power-ups and upgrades, which adds strategy and keeps everyone answering.

Teachers build kits, which are question sets with multiple choice or typed answers, images and, on paid plans, audio. Kits can be written from scratch, imported from a spreadsheet template, pasted from flashcard sites or copied from the public Question Bank. KitCollab lets students submit questions to a kit before a game, with the teacher approving each one. Game modes range from the Classic cash mode and team play to 2D modes where students move around a map, capture flags or survive as a group while answering questions. Teachers can also send Assignments, which students complete on their own time, with reports showing accuracy for each question and student.

Gimkit's strengths are its strategy-based gameplay, a wide range of game modes, AI question generation, student-written questions through KitCollab and an ad-free model. Its weaknesses are a free tier limited to a few rotating modes, an AI generator that cannot work from uploaded material and a game style that can feel competitive for some classes. Kahoot is the best-known live quiz tool. Blooket offers similar cash-and-power-up games with a lower Plus price. Quizlet focuses on flashcards and study modes. Wayground, formerly Quizizz, adds lessons and AI. Choose Gimkit if you want review games that reward strategy and keep every student answering.
