Strengths and limits

Amazon Polly

  • 5 million free standard characters every month, with no expiry.
  • Pay-per-character billing with no seats, plans or minimums.
  • Speech Marks give word and viseme timing for highlighting and lip sync.
  • Inherits AWS IAM, regional data residency and compliance certifications.
  • No voice cloning and no self-serve custom voices.
  • Generative and long-form voices cover only a subset of languages.
  • Content may be used for service improvement unless your organisation opts out.

Deepgram

  • Streaming rates under half a cent a minute for Nova-3 undercut most rivals.
  • Flux handles end-of-turn detection inside the model, which simplifies voice agent pipelines.
  • Self-hosted and custom-trained models are available for strict data requirements.
  • The $200 credit does not expire and needs no credit card.
  • Aura text-to-speech voices have less emotional range than ElevenLabs.
  • Many headline prices are promotional and may rise later.
  • Requests feed model training by default unless you add an opt-out flag to each call.

Which should you choose?

Choose Amazon Polly if

  • Developers already on AWS who want speech without signing up for another vendor.
  • IVR menus and Amazon Connect contact centers that need cheap, reliable prompts.
  • Reading apps that need word-level timing to highlight text as it is spoken.
  • High-volume notification or accessibility audio where cost per character matters most.

Look elsewhere if

  • Creators who want a visual editor or voiceover studio.
  • Projects that need instant voice cloning from a short recording.
  • Teams chasing the most human-sounding voices on current leaderboards.

Choose Deepgram if

  • Voice agent builders who need streaming transcription with turn detection under a few hundred milliseconds.
  • Call centres analysing thousands of hours of recordings a month at low cost.
  • Regulated organisations that must run speech models on their own servers.
  • Developers who want generous free credit to test accuracy on their own audio.

Look elsewhere if

  • People who want a ready-made transcription app instead of an API.
  • Creators who need expressive, emotional voiceover for videos or audiobooks.
  • Small teams expecting live support without an enterprise contract.

Amazon Polly logo Amazon Polly in brief

Amazon Polly launched at AWS re:Invent in November 2016 and is one of the oldest cloud text-to-speech services still in active development. It sits alongside Amazon Transcribe and Amazon Lex in the AWS AI services group, and it powers voices in Alexa features, Amazon Connect contact centers and thousands of third-party apps. Polly has no studio or editor of its own. You call it from the AWS console, the command line, an SDK or another AWS service such as Lambda, and it returns an MP3, OGG or PCM audio stream. Because it is part of AWS, it inherits the platform's compliance coverage, regional data residency, IAM permissions and consolidated billing. That makes it a default choice for teams whose infrastructure already runs on AWS and who want speech without adding another vendor.

A request sends plain text or SSML, a voice ID, an engine and an output format. SSML tags control pauses, emphasis, pronunciation, speaking rate and pitch, and Polly adds its own tags for breathing sounds and a newscaster speaking style on some neural voices. Lexicons let you define how brand names or acronyms should be pronounced across every request. Speech Marks return timing metadata for each word, sentence or viseme, which apps use to highlight text in sync with audio or drive an avatar's lip movements. For long content, asynchronous synthesis tasks write the output to an S3 bucket instead of streaming it. Audio can be cached and replayed at no extra charge, which keeps costs down for apps that repeat the same prompts.

Polly's weakness is voice quality at the top end. Its generative voices are good, but independent rankings such as the Artificial Analysis TTS leaderboard place ElevenLabs, Cartesia and newer models ahead on naturalness, and Polly has no instant voice cloning. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech offers more languages and Chirp 3 HD voices at similar prices, while Azure AI Speech has the largest neural voice catalogue and a custom neural voice program. For a developer already on AWS, Polly's strengths are the 5 million free standard characters, IAM-based security, S3 output and predictable per-character billing with no seats or plans. Choose Polly for IVR prompts, accessibility features, notifications and high-volume narration inside AWS. Choose ElevenLabs or Cartesia when the voice itself is the product.

Deepgram logo Deepgram in brief

Deepgram is a San Francisco speech AI company founded in 2015 by Scott Stephenson and Noah Shutty, two physicists who had worked on dark matter detection, and it went through Y Combinator. It builds its own speech models instead of reselling others. In January 2026 it raised a $130 million Series C led by AVP at a $1.3 billion valuation, taking total funding past $215 million, and Stephenson told TechCrunch the company was cash-flow positive the year before. Investors include In-Q-Tel, Madrona, Tiger, Twilio and SAP. Deepgram says more than 1,300 organisations use its models, among them the meeting notetaker Granola, the voice agent platform Vapi and Twilio. Alongside the round it bought OfOne, a Y Combinator startup that builds drive-through ordering agents for quick-service restaurants.

Deepgram offers four API families. Speech-to-text covers pre-recorded files over REST and live audio over WebSockets, with speaker diarization, smart formatting, keyterm prompting for jargon and automatic language detection across 45-plus languages. Text-to-speech, sold under the Aura name, streams spoken replies for agents. The Voice Agent API bundles transcription, a language model and speech into one WebSocket so developers do not have to orchestrate three vendors. Audio Intelligence adds summaries, topic detection, sentiment and intent on top of transcripts. A typical build sends a phone or meeting audio stream to the API and receives word-level timestamps within a few hundred milliseconds. Developers get SDKs for Python, JavaScript, Go and .NET, plus a playground in the console for comparing models on their own audio.

Deepgram is an API for developers, so anyone who wants a finished meeting notetaker or dictation app should look at Otter.ai or similar products built on top of it. Self-serve support is limited to the community and Discord until you sign an enterprise contract. AssemblyAI is the closest rival, with comparable accuracy, strong audio intelligence features and similar per-hour pricing. Speechmatics is stronger on broad language coverage and on-premises deals in Europe, and OpenAI's speech models are convenient for teams already on the OpenAI API. ElevenLabs leads on expressive text-to-speech, where Deepgram's Aura voices are tuned for speed over range. Pick Deepgram when you need low-latency streaming transcription for agents or call analytics at high volume, especially if self-hosting is a requirement.
