WellSaid Labs Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Enterprise text-to-speech built only on licensed, paid voice actor recordings

Last updated: October 19, 2026

What is WellSaid Labs?

WellSaid Labs is a text-to-speech studio and API for corporate training, marketing and product videos, built on voices licensed from paid actors. It suits teams in regulated industries that need clear commercial rights. A free trial gives three download minutes a month, and paid plans start at $10 a month billed annually.

WellSaid Labs spun out of the Allen Institute for AI's incubator in Seattle in 2018 and now operates from Bellevue, Washington under the shorter brand WellSaid. It raised a $10 million Series A in 2021 and later took venture debt instead of more equity. The company says more than half of the Fortune 500 use it, naming LinkedIn, T-Mobile, ServiceNow and Accenture as customers. Leadership has changed often: founder Matt Hocking moved to chairman, Brian Cook ran the company next, and former CFO Benjamin Dorr became chief executive in May 2025. The business positions itself against ElevenLabs on trust. Every stock voice comes from a consenting actor who earns royalties on the revenue that voice generates, so customers get commercial rights without wondering whose recordings trained the model.

Work happens in WellSaid Studio, a browser editor where you paste or upload a script (.txt, .pdf or .docx), split it into sections, pick a voice from 280-plus options and render. Word-level controls adjust pitch, pace, pauses and loudness, and you can mix several voices in one script for dialogue. A pronunciation toolbar suggests respellings for acronyms, brand names and borrowed words, and the company says it covers more than 9,000 medical and 500 legal terms out of the box. Audition, added in August 2026, lets you describe the voice you want in plain words and returns ranked matches read in your own script. Teams share projects in workspaces with collaborator and billing-admin roles. Finished audio exports to Adobe Express on Pro and to Premiere Pro on Business, and the API covers product integrations.

The voices run on Caruso, WellSaid's own foundation model, which entered beta in Studio and the API in March 2025 and became the default in the relaunched platform that October. That release raised output to 96 kHz audio on Enterprise, added the word-level director controls and brought 36 new partner voices for Arabic, Turkish and Persian across 18 regional dialects. Preview models such as 13.2 can be tested from a dropdown before they become the default. WellSaid runs a closed model trained only on licensed actor data, never on customer scripts or scraped audio, and says the platform is SOC 2 and GDPR compliant. It does not offer instant voice cloning from a short sample, which is a deliberate choice; custom brand voices are an Enterprise engagement recorded with a hired actor.

Billing is by downloaded minutes of finished audio, while generation and regeneration are unlimited on paid plans. The free trial gives three download minutes a month without commercial rights. Starter costs $10 a month billed annually ($120 a year) for 240 minutes a year, all English voices, 10 projects and 24 kHz audio; month to month it is $19 for 20 minutes. Pro costs $33 a month annually ($396 a year) for 2,160 minutes, unlimited projects and up to 48 kHz, or $49 monthly for 180 minutes. Business is $160 per user per month, billed yearly, with 2,880 minutes per user, up to five seats and a team workspace. Non-English voices and translation sit on Enterprise, so a team localising training into Arabic or Spanish should expect a sales conversation and a custom quote.

WellSaid's narrow focus is also its main limitation. The library is smaller than ElevenLabs, which offers thousands of community and cloned voices across 70-plus languages from $5 a month, and it lacks instant cloning, dubbing and sound effects. Murf AI covers similar training and marketing voiceover with more languages on self-serve plans and slide-sync tools for presentations. WellSaid's per-minute cost is higher than either at the lower tiers, and the most useful features (all languages, 96 kHz, SSO) are on Enterprise. Where it wins is procurement: legal and compliance teams at banks, hospitals and insurers can sign off on actor-licensed voices with clear royalties far faster than on a cloned or community voice. Choose WellSaid if you produce English training or product content at a large company. Choose ElevenLabs or Murf if you need breadth, cloning or many languages on a budget.

Who is WellSaid Labs best for?

  • Learning and development teams producing English training modules at a large company.
  • Regulated industries whose legal teams require voices licensed from consenting, paid actors.
  • Marketing teams that want a consistent brand narrator across product and explainer videos.
  • Scripts heavy with medical or legal terms that other engines mispronounce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does WellSaid Labs cost?

WellSaid's Starter plan costs $10 a month billed annually for 240 download minutes a year, or $19 month to month for 20 minutes. Pro is $33 a month annually or $49 monthly with more minutes and higher audio quality. Business costs $160 per user per month billed yearly. Enterprise is quoted and is the only tier with all languages and translation.

Does WellSaid Labs have a free plan?

WellSaid offers a free trial with no credit card. It includes three download minutes a month, curated voices and the studio's tone and pitch controls. Audio from the free tier has no commercial rights, so you cannot use it in published ads, courses or videos. Generation on the trial is capped at 10 minutes, while paid plans allow unlimited regeneration.

WellSaid Labs vs ElevenLabs: which should I choose?

ElevenLabs has a far larger voice library, instant cloning, dubbing, sound effects and 70-plus languages at lower entry prices. WellSaid has fewer voices but every one is licensed from a paid actor, plus enterprise controls and pronunciation tools for technical terms. Pick ElevenLabs for range and price, and WellSaid when legal review of voice rights is the main hurdle.

Does WellSaid train its AI on my scripts?

WellSaid says its voices are created from licensed actor recordings, never from customer or public content, and that its closed model is not trained on the scripts you upload. The company states it is SOC 2 and GDPR compliant and offers SSO, workspaces and admin roles. Enterprise buyers can review its trust center and request security documentation before signing.

Can I use WellSaid voices commercially?

Yes, on any paid plan. Starter, Pro, Business and Enterprise all include full commercial rights to the audio you download, covering ads, training courses, product videos and audiobooks. The free trial does not include commercial rights. Because voices come from compensated actors under license, WellSaid can grant those rights without the consent questions that affect cloned voices.
