Dragon Professional Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)
Windows dictation software for professionals, with custom commands and transcription
Last updated: October 26, 2026
What is Dragon Professional?
Dragon Professional is Nuance's speech recognition software for Windows, now owned by Microsoft. It dictates into any application, controls the PC by voice, runs custom commands and transcribes recordings from a single speaker. Version 16 sells as a one-time license for about $699 through US retailers, with Dragon Legal and cloud-hosted Dragon Professional Anywhere priced by quote.
Dragon traces back to Dragon Systems, which released Dragon NaturallySpeaking in 1997, one of the first continuous dictation products for PCs. Nuance Communications acquired it in 2005 and built a family of editions for professionals, lawyers, police and clinicians. Microsoft bought Nuance in 2022 for about $19.7 billion, mainly for its healthcare business, which now sells Dragon Medical One and Dragon Copilot. Dragon Professional v16 remains the general-purpose desktop edition for knowledge workers, field staff and people with accessibility needs such as repetitive strain injuries or limited mobility. The Mac version was discontinued in 2018, and the Dragon Anywhere mobile app stopped selling on July 1, 2026.
Dragon runs locally on Windows 11 or Windows 10 and dictates into Word, Outlook, browsers and most other applications. Nuance says its deep learning engine reaches up to 99 percent accuracy out of the box, adapts to the user's voice and accent over time, and works without voice training. Users correct, format and edit text by voice, and can control menus, the mouse and windows hands-free. Custom vocabularies add industry terms and acronyms. Auto-texts insert boilerplate such as signatures or clauses, and step-by-step commands automate repeated workflows. Customizations can sync across users and devices, and organizations deploy Dragon through Citrix and Nuance Management Center.
Transcription is the second core function. Dragon Professional converts recordings from a single speaker, such as dictated notes from a portable recorder or phone, into text, and an Auto Transcribe Folder Agent processes files dropped into a watched folder in batches. It does not identify multiple speakers in meetings, which newer cloud transcription tools handle. The AI work at Microsoft has focused on healthcare: Dragon Copilot combines dictation with ambient listening that turns clinician and patient conversations into notes inside EHRs such as Epic. Dragon Professional itself has not added generative AI features such as summarization or rewriting.
Nuance no longer lists prices on its own site and directs buyers to resellers or sales. US retailers sell a single Dragon Professional v16 license for about $699 as a one-time purchase, with CDW listing it near $678 in October 2026. Upgrades from version 15 cost about $349. Dragon Legal v16 lists around $799 at resellers. Some resellers offer academic, accessibility and government pricing near $589. Dragon Professional Anywhere, the cloud-hosted subscription on Azure for organizations, and Dragon Medical One are priced by quote. There is no free trial beyond a short grace period for unactivated installs, so check reseller return policies.
Dragon's strengths are accuracy for a single trained speaker, deep voice control of Windows, and offline local processing, which matters for privacy and accessibility users. Its weaknesses are a high one-time price, Windows-only support and limited development of new features outside healthcare. Built-in Windows voice typing and Apple Dictation are free but far less customizable. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and Willow Voice offer AI dictation that cleans up and formats speech across apps on Mac and Windows. Otter and Rev handle multi-speaker meeting transcription. Choose Dragon Professional if you dictate long documents on Windows, need hands-free PC control or work offline.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Dragon Professional cost?
Nuance does not publish prices on its site. US retailers sell a single Dragon Professional v16 license for about $699 as a one-time purchase, with some listing it slightly lower. Upgrades from version 15 cost about $349. Dragon Professional Anywhere, the cloud subscription, and Dragon Medical One are priced by quote.
Is Dragon available for Mac?
No. Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in 2018, and current versions run only on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Mac users can run Dragon in a Windows virtual machine with some limitations, or use alternatives such as Apple Dictation, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper or Aqua Voice, which offer AI dictation on macOS.
Who owns Dragon now?
Microsoft owns Dragon through its 2022 acquisition of Nuance Communications for about $19.7 billion. Desktop editions such as Dragon Professional and Dragon Legal are still sold under the Nuance name, while healthcare products, Dragon Medical One and Dragon Copilot, are sold by Microsoft. The Dragon Anywhere mobile app stopped selling in July 2026.
Is Dragon better than free dictation in Windows?
Dragon is more accurate for long dictation, learns your voice and vocabulary, and offers full voice control of applications plus custom commands and auto-texts. Windows voice typing is free and fine for short messages but lacks those customization and correction tools. Heavy dictation users and accessibility users usually find Dragon worth the price.
Dragon Professional or Wispr Flow, which is better?
Dragon runs offline on Windows, offers deep voice control of the PC and suits long, formal dictation with custom vocabularies. Wispr Flow is a cloud AI dictation app for Mac, Windows and iPhone that removes filler words and formats text automatically, sold by subscription. Writers who want polished text quickly often prefer Wispr Flow.
