Box AI is a collection of AI capabilities inside Box Intelligent Content Management, not a standalone model. Box introduced it on May 2, 2023, with an OpenAI and ChatGPT API integration. The product targets organizations that store business content in Box and need responses governed by existing permissions. Its current scope includes document and image questions, Box Notes generation, multi-file and Hubs questions, AI-powered search, Extract Agents, Box Agent, and AI Studio for custom agents. Box presents these capabilities within its business plans, with advanced functions tied to higher tiers and AI Units. Buyers therefore acquire Box's content platform and its AI controls together, rather than an independent chatbot. Box offers unlimited users on business plans, with a minimum of three seats.

A typical workflow begins with content already stored in Box. A user asks about a document, image, note, Hub, or collection of files, then uses the response to draft text, locate information, or extract structured metadata. Teams can configure agents with instructions, business context, and model selection. Developers can call Box AI APIs for question answering, text generation, and extraction, while the AI Studio API supports agent configuration. Box Agent handles multi-step work, and existing Box permissions govern content access. This makes Box AI suited to controlled repositories rather than general personal brainstorming. Results still depend on retrieval, indexing, permissions, and the selected provider model, so generated answers require normal review before they enter business records.

Box uses multiple external model providers instead of presenting one Box-owned model. Its named options include Microsoft Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock with Anthropic Claude, and Google Vertex AI. Box AI Studio became generally available in January 2025, followed by the AI Studio API on February 19, 2025, as part of Enterprise Advanced. On October 20, 2025, Box expanded question answering, text generation, Extract API access, and model choice to Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise. Box release listings also identify a new Box Agent in April 2026, administrative model controls in September 2026, and agent guardrails in October 2026. Those dated releases show continued expansion, while the service remains a hosted configuration layer rather than a self-hosted model.

Box does not publish one universal Box AI add-on price. Business costs $15 per user monthly or $20 per user monthly with annual billing. Business Plus costs $33 monthly or $25 annually, and Enterprise costs $47 monthly or $35 annually. Enterprise Plus is $50 per user monthly with annual billing only, while Enterprise Advanced requires a custom quote. Business and Business Plus include unlimited single-document and image questions and content generation, but AI API use consumes purchased AI Units. Enterprise includes 1,000 monthly AI Units, Enterprise Plus 2,000, and Enterprise Advanced 20,000. Units do not roll over, and Box lists a minimum of three users. A two-week trial is available before subscription billing begins.

The main limitation is packaging: advanced agents, extended context, Extract Agents, and larger AI Unit allowances require higher plans or a sales conversation. Microsoft 365 Copilot centers on Microsoft Graph, Office, and Teams, while Google Gemini for Workspace centers on Drive, Gmail, and Docs. Dropbox Dash focuses on cross-application search and knowledge organization. Box differentiates itself through native permissions, Hubs, multi-file questions, extraction, custom agents, APIs, and compliance controls. It remains dependent on external providers, indexed content, and plan gates, while AI Units add a separate usage budget. Organizations that already govern substantial content in Box should pick Box AI.

Who is Box AI best for?

  • Organizations that already store governed documents in Box.
  • Teams needing permission-aware questions across enterprise content.
  • Developers building Box-based extraction and generation workflows.
  • Enterprises configuring custom agents with selected model providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Box AI cost?

Box AI is included within Box business plans rather than sold at one universal add-on price. Business costs $15 per user monthly with monthly billing, or $20 per user monthly with annual billing. Business Plus costs $33 monthly or $25 annually, and Enterprise Advanced uses a custom quote. AI API activity can require purchased AI Units.

Does Box have a free AI plan?

Box does not publish a separate free Box AI plan. Its AI capabilities are tied to paid Box business plans. Business and Business Plus include unlimited single-document and image questions and content generation, while API activity and advanced features depend on AI Units and the selected plan. Box offers a two-week trial before subscription billing.

How does Box AI compare with Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Box AI centers on content stored in Box, including documents, images, Notes, Hubs, extraction workflows, and custom agents. Microsoft 365 Copilot centers on Microsoft Graph, Office, and Teams. Box is the closer fit for organizations whose governed repository is Box, while Copilot suits teams whose working content and permissions are primarily in Microsoft 365.

Does Box AI train on customer data?

Box says its providers do not log or store customer submissions beyond in-memory processing, and that Box and its providers do not train on customer data. Box also says questions and answers are not retained after the relevant document or application is closed. Customers can enable or disable AI, existing permissions apply, and custom-model training requires explicit approval.

Can businesses use Box AI commercially?

Yes. Box AI is licensed through Box business plans and purchased AI Unit arrangements. Public APIs, SDKs, and the AI Studio API support business integrations, with plan gates and metered AI Unit use. Enterprise Advanced is the principal tier for custom agents and advanced API capabilities, while foundation APIs became available on lower tiers in October 2025.
