Formative logo Formative in brief

Formative, formerly GoFormative, is owned by Newsela and serves K-12 teachers, schools and districts that want to check understanding during lessons rather than after a unit ends. Teachers create activities, assign them to classes and see each student's work appear live, including typed answers and drawings, so they can give feedback while students are still working. It integrates with Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Clever and other learning systems, and it can convert existing PDFs and worksheets into digital activities. Formative highlights an ESSA Tier II rating for its impact research, which matters to districts that must back up edtech purchases under federal rules.

Activities can mix more than 20 question types, including multiple choice, free response, drawing, audio response, graphing, hot spot, hot text, categorize, matching, resequence and fill in the blank, along with Lesson Blocks, videos and embedded Google Slides. The Back-to-School 2026 update added multi-part questions and further item types. Teachers can pace lessons themselves, let students work at their own speed or run a gamified mode. Auto-grading scores objective questions, rubrics cover open answers, and a standards tracker shows mastery over time. Accommodations such as text to speech, time limit extensions and reduced answer choices are available on school and district licenses.

Formative's strengths are live views of student work, a wide range of question types, PDF conversion, Luna AI on every plan, standards tracking and district features such as lockdown testing and an item bank. Its weaknesses are a free plan restricted to basic question types and short data history, a higher individual price than many quiz tools and an interface with many options to learn. Pear Deck adds interactivity to slide decks. Nearpod offers ready-made lessons. Wayground, formerly Quizizz, mixes assessments with games. Google Forms is free but limited. Choose Formative if you want detailed, real-time assessment with AI help for building and grading.

Nearpod logo Nearpod in brief

Nearpod was founded in Miami in 2012 by Guido Kovalskys, Emiliano Abramzon and Felipe Sommer, and Renaissance Learning acquired it in 2021 for about $650 million. Renaissance, which also owns Star Assessments, Freckle and Lalilo, sells Nearpod to schools and districts across the US and abroad. The core idea is that a teacher's presentation becomes interactive: students join with a code on a laptop, tablet or phone, and every slide can carry a question, drawing prompt, poll or activity. Teachers see each student's responses in real time and get reports afterward. Nearpod's library holds more than 22,000 ready-made lessons, videos and activities, many built with partners.

Lessons combine content slides, videos, web pages, virtual field trips and 3D objects with more than 20 activity types, including open-ended questions, polls, quizzes, Draw It, Collaborate boards, Matching Pairs, Drag and Drop and Time to Climb, a gamified quiz race. Teachers can import PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides files, or build lessons through a Google Slides add-on. Lessons run in Live mode, where the teacher controls pacing, or Student-Paced mode for homework and absences. Interactive Videos insert questions into YouTube clips or Nearpod's library. School licenses add math and social studies programs, virtual manipulatives, co-teaching and LMS integrations.

Nearpod's strength is turning existing slides into lessons with formative assessment and data. Its drawbacks are that the best AI features are locked to school licenses, and that teachers report students drifting off-task on devices without classroom management tools. Pear Deck, owned by GoGuardian, offers similar interactive slides inside Google Slides and PowerPoint. Kahoot! and Quizizz, now Wayground, focus on game-based quizzes. MagicSchool and Brisk generate lesson materials but do not deliver them live. Diffit levels reading texts. Choose Nearpod if your school wants interactive lessons, real-time student data and a large standards-aligned library in one platform.
