Braze in brief
Braze was founded in 2011 in New York as Appboy by Bill Magnuson, Jon Hyman and Mark Ghermezian, starting with mobile app messaging before renaming in 2017 and expanding across channels. It went public on Nasdaq in 2021 under the ticker BRZE. Its customers are consumer brands in retail, media, travel, finance, gaming and food delivery with large mobile and web audiences, and CDP.com reported that Braze had 2,789 customers in its second quarter of fiscal 2027. Braze competes with Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Journey Optimizer and Klaviyo at the upper end, and is known for real-time, event-driven messaging at very large scale.
Canvas is Braze's visual journey builder, with branching logic, waits, experiments and triggers based on user behavior or schedules. Messages go out natively across email, mobile and web push, SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, in-app messages, content cards and webhooks from one interface. The Braze Data Platform ingests events from apps, websites and data warehouses such as Snowflake, and Currents streams engagement data back out. Liquid templating and catalogs personalize content for each user. Intelligent Timing picks the best send time per user and Intelligent Selection shifts traffic toward winning variants. Predictive features forecast churn and purchases, and dashboards report on revenue and retention.
Braze's strengths are real-time messaging at very large scale, broad native channels including mobile push and in-app, a flexible journey builder, deep data integrations and AI that ranges from an assistant to self-learning decisioning. Its weaknesses are high cost, quote-only pricing, the need for engineering support to implement and a platform far beyond what small businesses require. Iterable is a similar cross-channel rival. Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Adobe Journey Optimizer suit companies already using those suites. Klaviyo serves ecommerce brands at lower cost. Choose Braze if you run a large consumer app or brand that needs personalized, real-time messaging across many channels.
