Rosetta Stone Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Immersion courses in 25 languages with TruAccent speech scoring and AI Chat Missions

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Rosetta Stone?

Rosetta Stone is an immersion-based language app owned by IXL Learning that teaches 25 languages through pictures and audio, without translation. Rosetta Stone Sapphire, launched in August 2026, adds Chat Missions for conversation practice and Sapphire Studio for AI-generated study materials. TruAccent scores pronunciation. All languages cost $19.99 a month or $159 a year.

Rosetta Stone started in 1992 in Virginia and became famous for its yellow boxed CD-ROM courses. Its Dynamic Immersion method teaches through images, audio and context instead of translation or grammar explanations, much as a child learns a first language. The company moved to subscriptions in the 2010s, was bought by Cambium Learning in 2020, and has been part of IXL Learning since 2021, alongside IXL, Dictionary.com, Vocabulary.com and Wyzant. Rosetta Stone says more than 50 million learners have used its method. The app teaches 25 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Irish, Latin, Persian and both American and British English.

Lessons follow a learning path of short units that combine listening, speaking, reading and writing, with a photo or audio clip paired to each word or phrase. TruAccent, Rosetta Stone's speech recognition engine, compares your pronunciation with native speaker data in nearly every lesson and includes a setting for children's voices. Flashcards cover more than 500 topics. Stories, audio companion lessons and phrasebooks support review, and progress syncs across iOS, Android and desktop browsers with offline downloads. Optional tutoring offers 30-minute online sessions with Rosetta Stone-certified tutors, sold in packs of five or 10 to US subscribers. Business and school editions add admin reporting.

Rosetta Stone Sapphire, introduced on August 4, 2026, is a redesign of the whole app. It brings a new interface, all 25 languages in every subscription, and two AI-assisted features. Chat Missions are game-like, text-based conversations with set goals, such as ordering water at a restaurant or haggling with a market vendor. Sapphire Studio lets learners generate their own practice materials, games and help with tasks such as drafting an email in the target language. IXL Learning CEO Paul Mishkin described Sapphire as an experience that adapts to learners. Rosetta Stone does not publish which language models power Sapphire Studio or Chat Missions.

Rosetta Stone Sapphire has two plans with the same features. Monthly costs $19.99, and yearly costs $159, about $13.25 a month, which Rosetta Stone says saves 33 percent. Both include all 25 languages. There is no free tier, but purchases carry a 14-day money-back guarantee. Partner and creator pages on Rosetta Stone's own site have offered lower prices, such as $119 a year in September 2026, according to reviewer OnlineCourseing. Lifetime licenses, common in past promotions, no longer appear on the standard price page and cover products only while they remain supported. Tutoring packages cost extra and prices are shown after you subscribe.

Rosetta Stone's strengths are pronunciation feedback, a calm ad-free app and access to all 25 languages for one price. Its weaknesses are limited grammar explanation, slow progress for learners who want rules spelled out, and value compared with cheaper apps. Babbel and Busuu explain grammar and offer AI speaking practice. Pimsleur focuses on audio and speaking. Duolingo is free and gamified with AI video calls on Max. Speak and Praktika are built around open AI conversation. Choose Rosetta Stone if you prefer learning through immersion, want strong pronunciation scoring, or plan to study more than one language.

Who is Rosetta Stone best for?

  • Learners who prefer immersion over translation.
  • People focused on accurate pronunciation.
  • Families or learners studying more than one language.
  • Schools and companies that want admin reporting.
