Optimizely Opal is an AI agent orchestration layer within Optimizely One, made by Optimizely for commercial marketing and digital experience work. Optimizely introduced Opal in 2023 as the identity for earlier AI-powered recommendations and personalization features, alongside newer generative AI capabilities. It remains active as of October 26, 2026, and is not a standalone company. Optimizely traces its corporate history to a company founded in 2009 by Dan Siroker and Pete Koomen. Episerver completed its acquisition of Optimizely on October 21, 2020, and the combined business adopted the Optimizely name in January 2021. TechCrunch reported more than $200 million in funding before that acquisition. The product now covers content, experimentation, personalization, analytics, workflow automation and agent orchestration within Optimizely One.

Opal combines chat with in-app agents, tools, skills and workflow orchestration. A typical user starts with a request, then uses an agent connected to Optimizely content, brand information, permissions, analytics, experiments or personalization data. Administrators can manage access, create instruction agents and configure workflows with nested steps. Agent Builder, Skill Builder and Agent Directory support creation and discovery, while version history, execution statuses and input guardrails add operational controls. URL browsing can use Google Web Risk, with optional Cloudflare Radar deep scanning. Conversation compaction helps manage longer sessions, and installed agents can update automatically. Opal connects to hundreds of tools across Optimizely One, allowing teams to work within existing permissions and data. Copilot access also supports campaign management, image generation, image editing and experiment analysis.

Opal does not publish one fixed model identifier. Optimizely describes approved provider families that vary by product and feature, including Google Gemini and ChatGPT or OpenAI services. Anthropic Claude models became available through Google Vertex AI on March 15, 2026, and Anthropic became an Optimizely subprocessor from that date. Optimizely reserves the right to add, remove or substitute approved large language models. Recent delivered releases include Virtual Teammates with persistent memory and individual Opti IDs on August 25, 2026, plus Team Messages and Brands. Feature Experimentation Governance and Feature Flag Implementation agents arrived September 2. August releases included CMS 13 Page Builder and Content Analysis agents. The Agent Library contained more than 45 prebuilt agents on September 3.

Opal has custom pricing through Optimizely subscriptions, and Optimizely does not publish a standalone monthly, annual or per-seat Opal price. Credit billing for Opal and Mark usage began May 7, 2025 across Content Marketing Platform, Web Experimentation, Feature Experimentation, Personalization, CMS SaaS, Collaboration and Optimizely Data Platform. Eligible instances can receive up to 200 complimentary credits monthly from October 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. That allowance is promotional, not a public free tier. Credits are pooled across eligible products, dashboards show paid, monthly free and bonus balances, and Optimizely does not publish a complete dollar price per credit. Usage requires an Opti ID and enabled generative AI. Administrators can disable applicable AI features.

The main limitation is commercial visibility: buyers cannot calculate a standard annual bill from public Opal pricing, and usage depends on credit consumption. Opal is a broader platform layer rather than a dedicated experimentation product. Adobe GenStudio is a closer alternative for content operations, while AB Tasty and VWO focus more narrowly on experimentation and personalization. SitecoreAI and Contentstack are closer when content workflows and agent orchestration matter most. Optimizely warns that outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete, offensive or non-unique, so people must review them and verify rights to inputs. Customers should not transmit electronic protected health information until compliance and a business associate agreement are confirmed because the terms warn that large language models may not satisfy HIPAA requirements. Teams should pick Opal when they already use Optimizely One and want agents connected to its native data, permissions and workflows.

  • Optimizely One customers coordinating marketing and content workflows.
  • Teams managing experimentation, personalization and analytics in one platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Optimizely Opal cost?

Optimizely sells Opal through subscriptions with custom pricing and does not publish a standalone monthly, annual or per-seat price. Credit billing began May 7, 2025 for Opal and Mark usage across several Optimizely products. Optimizely also does not publish a complete dollar price per credit, so buyers need an account-specific commercial proposal.

Does Optimizely Opal have a free plan?

Opal does not have a public standalone free plan. Eligible instances can receive up to 200 complimentary credits monthly from October 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. The allowance requires an Opti ID and enabled generative AI, is promotional, and may be changed or discontinued by Optimizely.

How does Opal compare with Adobe GenStudio?

Opal is centered on agent orchestration across Optimizely One, including content, experimentation, personalization, analytics and native permissions. Adobe GenStudio is a closer substitute for content operations and marketing asset work. Opal is the more natural fit for organizations already committed to Optimizely data and workflows, while Adobe is more relevant to teams standardized on Adobe marketing products.

Does Optimizely Opal train on customer data?

Optimizely’s published terms say customers retain ownership of inputs and own outputs to the extent permitted by law. The terms also warn that outputs may be similar or non-unique, and Optimizely can change underlying model providers. Customers may not use AI features or outputs to develop, train or improve other AI models unless Optimizely permits it. Applicable AI features can be disabled.

Can businesses use Opal output commercially?

Opal is intended for commercial marketing, content, experimentation, analytics and digital experience work. Customers own output to the extent permitted by law, but output may be inaccurate, offensive or non-unique. Customers remain responsible for rights to inputs, human evaluation, accuracy, brand suitability and compliance. Optimizely warns that LLMs may not satisfy HIPAA requirements.
