Google AI Studio Review, Pricing & Alternatives (2026)

Free browser workspace for testing Gemini models and vibe coding apps in Build mode

Last updated: October 26, 2026

What is Google AI Studio?

Google AI Studio is Google's free web workspace for developers to try Gemini models, get a Gemini API key and build apps. The Playground tests prompts, images, video, speech and live voice, and Build mode turns a description into a full-stack web or Android app. Using AI Studio is free, while Gemini API calls from your own code bill per token.

Google AI Studio, formerly MakerSuite, is the fastest way to start with Google's Gemini models. It runs in the browser with a Google account and serves developers, students, startup founders and product teams who want to prototype before writing production code. It is the home of the Gemini Developer API: you create API keys and projects, view usage and rate limits and copy working code for Python, JavaScript, Go and other languages. Google says AI Studio usage is free of charge in all available regions. Companies that need enterprise controls usually move to Google Cloud's Vertex AI, now part of the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, for production.

The Playground is a chat and prompt workspace for every current Gemini model, along with image generation and editing through Nano Banana, video through Veo, music through Lyria, text to speech and the Live API for real-time voice and video conversations. Developers can attach files, PDFs, images, audio and YouTube links, set system instructions, adjust temperature and thinking levels, turn on tools such as Grounding with Google Search, Google Maps, URL context and code execution, and request structured JSON output. Prompts can be saved and shared, and a compare view puts two models side by side. Stream mode lets you talk to Gemini while sharing a screen or camera.

Build mode, which Google introduced in October 2025 as vibe coding in AI Studio, turns a plain-language description into a working app. By default it creates a full-stack web app with a React front end and a Node.js server, and it can also produce native Android apps in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose with a browser-based emulator. AI Chips add features such as image generation or Maps data to a prompt. The Antigravity Agent edits files across the project, and you can import code from GitHub, remix apps from the gallery, keep API keys server-side as secrets and deploy. Google's Cloud Starter Tier lets eligible accounts publish up to two full-stack apps without a billing account.

AI Studio itself is free, with modest daily quotas. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher quotas in the AI Studio interface and access to premium models such as Gemini 4 Argon, which is not on the free plan. The Gemini API used from your own code has a free tier for certain models, where prompts may be used to improve Google products, and paid tiers that start when you link billing. Paid tiers add higher rate limits, context caching and a Batch API at 50% off. Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through December 31, 2026, with prices set to double in January 2027.

Google AI Studio's strengths are free access to Gemini models in a polished interface, fast API key setup, multimodal testing including live voice and video, and Build mode for turning ideas into deployable web and Android apps. Its weaknesses are free-tier data use for product improvement, quotas that change often, agent features such as Deep Research that need a paid API, and fewer enterprise controls than Vertex AI. Vertex AI is Google's enterprise path. Firebase Studio offers a fuller cloud development environment. Lovable, Bolt and v0 are dedicated app builders. Choose Google AI Studio if you want to try Gemini or prototype an AI app for free.

Who is Google AI Studio best for?

  • Developers trying Gemini for the first time.
  • Prototyping multimodal and voice apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google AI Studio free?

Yes. Google says AI Studio usage is free of charge in all available regions, with modest daily quotas. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher quotas and premium models in the interface. Calling the Gemini API from your own code has a free tier for certain models and paid tiers billed per token.

What is Build mode in Google AI Studio?

Build mode is AI Studio's vibe coding feature. You describe an app and Gemini generates a full-stack web app with a React front end and Node.js server, or a native Android app in Kotlin. You can edit with follow-up prompts, import from GitHub, view the code and deploy, with API keys kept server-side.

Does Google use my AI Studio data for training?

On the Gemini API free tier, Google says content may be used to improve its products. On paid tiers, content is not used for that purpose. Teams handling sensitive or customer data should link billing and use a paid tier, or move to Vertex AI for enterprise data controls.

How much does the Gemini API cost?

Prices depend on the model. Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through December 31, 2026, doubling in January 2027. The Batch API costs 50% less. Paid tiers start once you link billing, with spending caps that rise with account history.

Google AI Studio or Vertex AI, which should I use?

Use AI Studio to explore Gemini, prototype prompts and apps and get an API key fast, with free usage. Use Vertex AI, part of Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, for production workloads that need IAM, private networking, data residency, provisioned throughput, SLAs and access to non-Google models such as Claude.
