HeyGen in brief
HeyGen is a synthetic-media company founded by Joshua Xu and Wayne Liang in 2020. The company launched its app in September 2022, after operating under the names Surreal and Movio, and rebranded as HeyGen in April 2023. Bloomberg reported a $60 million funding round in June 2024 at a $500 million valuation, bringing reported total funding to $74 million at that point. HeyGen's pricing page says more than 100,000 businesses use the service. The product has expanded from spokesperson videos into a broader platform for avatar production, translation, voice cloning, prompt-generated scenes, interactive video, and developer access. Its strongest case remains business communication that needs a recognizable presenter without a filming session, rather than unconstrained narrative filmmaking.
A typical HeyGen workflow begins with a script, prompt, presentation, document, image, audio file, or recorded reference. The user selects a stock presenter, custom video avatar, photo avatar, voice, language, and visual style, then edits scenes in the AI Studio workspace. The platform supports text-to-video, image-to-video, audio-to-video, PowerPoint and PDF imports, captions, resizing, voice cloning, screen recording, video translation, and interactive video. Translation can include lip synchronization and script editing on higher plans. Teams can use shared workspaces, brand assets, centralized billing, and integrations. Developers can call the API for avatar videos, translation, and prompt-generated scenes. This workflow favors repeatable explainers, training modules, product messages, and localized marketing over frame-by-frame production control.
HeyGen's credit meter makes costs less predictable than a flat export allowance, particularly for model-heavy scenes, translation, and longer videos. Avatar quality, model access, and some features vary by plan and region, while free output is personal and noncommercial. Its privacy policy says submitted inputs may be used for service improvement, product development, and model training, with an opt-out request available. Synthesia is the closer enterprise presenter-video rival, with a more focused training and business-video position. Colossyan is another strong choice for instructional content, while D-ID is oriented toward talking-avatar generation. Pick HeyGen if multilingual presenters, custom avatars, and API access matter more than cinematic control. For recurring presenter videos and multilingual training, HeyGen is a more natural fit than a general video editor.
