Exterro logo Exterro in brief

Exterro was founded in 2004 in Portland, Oregon, by CEO Bobby Balachandran, and started with legal hold and eDiscovery software for corporate legal departments. Over the past decade it grew through acquisitions, most notably AccessData in 2020, which brought the FTK forensic toolkit used by law enforcement and incident response teams, along with privacy and governance products. Exterro now describes its category as data risk management, a single platform where legal, privacy, security and compliance teams handle litigation, investigations, regulatory requests and data subject requests from the same data map. Customers include large corporations, government agencies and police forces, and Exterro holds an annual user conference, XChange.

The platform has several product lines. Legal Hold issues and tracks preservation notices to custodians with reminders and audit trails. Exterro Review and processing tools handle collection, culling, review and production for eDiscovery. FTK Forensic Toolkit, FTK Imager and FTK Central cover device imaging, mobile and computer forensics and investigation case management. Privacy and governance modules manage data mapping, data subject access requests, consent and retention, and Smart Breach Review supports incident response. Because these share a data layer, a matter can move from legal hold to collection to review without exporting data between vendors. Deployment options include cloud and on-premises, which matters for law enforcement.

Exterro's strength is breadth: few vendors combine legal hold, forensics, eDiscovery and privacy operations with a single data map and agentic automation. Its weaknesses are enterprise pricing, implementation effort and a review interface that some users find less polished than specialist tools. Relativity and RelativityOne dominate large-scale review with aiR. Everlaw and DISCO offer cloud review with generative AI that many law firms prefer. Logikcull and Nextpoint suit smaller teams with simpler pricing. OneTrust leads in privacy operations, and Cellebrite in mobile forensics. Choose Exterro if your legal and compliance teams want one governed platform for holds, investigations and data requests.

Logikcull logo Logikcull in brief

Logikcull was founded in 2004 and became known for making eDiscovery self-service, so small firms, in-house teams and government agencies could handle discovery without IT staff or outside vendors. Reveal, an AI eDiscovery company backed by K1 Investment Management, acquired Logikcull and IPRO in August 2023 in deals it said were valued at more than $1 billion combined. Logikcull now serves as Reveal's entry product for smaller and mid-sized matters, while Reveal's own platform handles large, complex litigation. Logikcull says it has more than 38,000 users across law firms, corporations, government agencies and educational institutions.

The workflow starts with uploading data by drag and drop, including PST files, ZIP archives, loose documents and exports from Slack or Google Vault. Logikcull processes the data automatically, running OCR, de-duplication, email threading and indexing, then applies smart tags that flag privileged communications, PII, inclusive emails, foreign languages and other categories. Reviewers search with keywords or filters, tag documents, apply redactions, and produce Bates-stamped sets in standard formats. Logikcull says its filters typically cut uploaded data by 70 to 90 percent before review. Matters can be billed back to clients by data volume, and downloads are unlimited.

Logikcull's appeal is speed to start: a lawyer can open a matter and upload data the same day without training. Its limits are fewer advanced analytics and review workflows than enterprise platforms, and pricing that requires a quote for subscriptions. Everlaw offers a modern cloud platform with generative AI for larger litigation teams, DISCO combines review with Auto Review AI, and RelativityOne with Relativity aiR is the standard for big document reviews. Nextpoint and Exterro serve similar small and corporate markets. Choose Logikcull if you handle small to mid-sized matters in-house and want predictable, data-based pricing with AI answers built in.
