How to Pick an AI Image Generator for Your Use Case

There are now more capable AI image generation tools than most people have time to evaluate. The decision is not "which is best overall" — the tools have genuinely different strengths that matter depending on what you are making.

This guide walks through the most common use cases and which tool fits each.

"I need high-quality visuals for marketing or editorial content"

Midjourney is the right starting point. Its aesthetic quality is consistently the highest of any image generation tool. For aspirational, atmospheric, or premium-feeling images — product marketing, editorial illustration, concept art — Midjourney delivers results on first generation that competitors require multiple attempts to match.

Standard at $30/month gives you unlimited relaxed generations and 15 fast hours per month. For marketing teams producing regular visual content, that is practical.

The friction: Discord interface. It is improving but remains clunkier than web-native tools.

"I need to include readable text in images"

DALL-E 3 via ChatGPT. This is the clearest use case differentiation. When you need logos, signs, labels, product text, or readable copy as part of an image, DALL-E 3 is the only major tool that produces reliable text rendering. Midjourney and Stable Diffusion produce garbled text. Ideogram handles text well but DALL-E 3 is more consistent.

If you already have ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), DALL-E 3 is included with your subscription.

"I need product photography or e-commerce visuals"

Stable Diffusion with product-photography models, or Adobe Firefly.

For e-commerce and product photography, the ability to put your actual product in a generated scene is critical. Stable Diffusion with IP-Adapter or ControlNet lets you provide your product image and generate scene variations around it. No other mainstream tool does this as well.

Adobe Firefly is the right choice if you work in Adobe Creative Cloud. The integration with Photoshop's Generative Fill is the most practical workflow: select an area, describe what should go there, generate. No new tools to learn. 25 free monthly credits; Firefly Premium included in Creative Cloud.

"I need social media graphics with text overlays"

Ideogram is specifically strong here. Ideogram generates images with accurate text rendering and has the most reliable output for social media quote cards, announcement graphics, and text-heavy visuals. The typography quality is better than DALL-E 3 for stylized text.

Free tier: 10 generations per day. Pro at $8/month ($7/month annual) removes daily limits and adds private generation.

"I need to generate a lot of images affordably"

Stable Diffusion locally is the only solution with no per-generation cost beyond hardware.

Install AUTOMATIC1111 or ComfyUI, download an SDXL or SD 3 checkpoint from Hugging Face or Civitai, and generate as many images as your hardware can produce. An NVIDIA RTX 4060 (8GB VRAM) at ~$300 pays for itself compared to subscription costs within a few months of regular use.

If you do not have suitable hardware: Stable Diffusion via the Stability AI API at $0.04-0.08/image is significantly cheaper than Midjourney or DALL-E 3 at equivalent volume.

"I need commercially safe images for business use"

Adobe Firefly is the strongest on commercial safety. Adobe trained Firefly on licensed content and Adobe Stock. It is designed for commercial use from the ground up, and Adobe offers content credentials that help verify image origin.

Midjourney's Pro plan ($60/month) includes commercial rights and stealth mode. DALL-E 3 with a ChatGPT Plus subscription includes commercial use. Stable Diffusion commercial licensing depends on which base model you use.

The copyright question for AI-generated images is not fully resolved in any jurisdiction, but tools trained on licensed content with explicit commercial use terms give you the strongest legal position.

"I need consistent character appearance across multiple images"

Stable Diffusion with LoRA fine-tuning is the best technical solution. Train a LoRA on your character with 15-20 reference images and apply it to all future generations. The character stays recognizable across different scenes, angles, and lighting.

Midjourney has improved character consistency with its Character Reference feature. You can reference a previous image to maintain appearance. Not as precise as a trained LoRA but no technical setup required.

For brand mascots, recurring characters in content, or any scenario where you need the same person/character in many different images, this distinction matters significantly.

"I want to try AI image generation without spending money"

Bing Image Creator (free, powered by DALL-E 3) gives you solid image quality with no subscription. Generous daily limit of free "boosts" (fast generation), then slower but still free generation afterward.

Ideogram free gives 10 generations per day with no account requirement for the first few.

Adobe Firefly free gives 25 monthly credits for commercially safe images.

Stable Diffusion locally is free after hardware.

Midjourney has no free tier as of 2026.

The tools have converged on good general quality. The differentiation is now at the edges: text rendering, consistency, commercial compliance, and volume pricing. Match the tool to the specific constraint that matters for your work.
