Which Free AI Tools Can You Use Without a Credit Card?

Compare free AI tools without a credit card in 2026, including chat, images, coding and writing, with current limits, account rules and privacy settings.

Short answer

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and other major AI tools offer ongoing free access without a credit card. For documents, choose Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM; for occasional coding, GitHub Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions and 50 premium requests monthly. Canva, Firefly and Ideogram offer limited free generation. Account requirements differ: Claude requires SMS verification, while Ideogram grants free credits only through Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in. Avoid confusing these plans with paid trials: CapCut Pro’s web trial requires a payment method and renews unless cancelled.

Which Free AI Tools Can You Use Without a Credit Card?

You can use major AI chat, writing, image and coding tools without handing over a credit card. The useful distinction is between an ongoing $0 account and an automatically renewing paid trial. As of October 22, 2026, several familiar names and free allowances have changed.

Which free AI tools are worth starting with?

ChatGPT is the easiest general starting point; Gemini Notebook is a stronger fit for questions about documents you choose. GitHub Copilot Free suits occasional coding, while Canva Free combines design tools with a measured AI allowance.

All prices below are for ongoing free access. “Variable” means the vendor does not promise a fixed public message allowance. A free account can still require identity checks, and regional restrictions apply.

Accounts, phone checks and paid-trial traps

Claude requires a supported mobile number for new-account verification. Email registration alone is insufficient: Anthropic excludes VoIP numbers and landlines, and says the SMS verification step cannot be skipped. This makes Claude less suitable if your main requirement is avoiding phone verification.

Microsoft Copilot supports signed-out use. A personal Microsoft account adds history and other features. Google also permits some signed-out Gemini use, but a Google account is needed for features such as saved activity, uploads and image generation. ChatGPT documents signed-out access alongside its account-based service.

GitHub Copilot Free needs a GitHub account. Gemini Notebook uses a Google account. Canva and Adobe use their own account systems; Ideogram's sign-in choice affects its free allowance. DeepSeek collects email and/or phone details or third-party login information. Meta AI access depends on the supported app, account and country. Mistral, Grok, Perplexity and Grammarly offer account-based free access; CapCut links credit balances to accounts.

Avoid subscription checkout if your requirement is no payment details. CapCut's eligible seven-day Pro trial requires a valid payment method on the web and renews unless cancelled. Google's student AI subscription offers also require a valid payment method. These are optional promotions, separate from ordinary free access. Microsoft says payment-information requirements for Microsoft 365 trials vary by offer and region.

General chat: choose features before counting prompts

ChatGPT Free currently includes web search, uploads, image creation and data analysis. OpenAI describes everyday text chats as unlimited, subject to abuse safeguards; that wording does not make image generation, uploads or analysis unlimited. Each tool can stop separately.

Gemini publishes a 32,000-token context window without an AI subscription. Its compute-based allowance depends on prompt complexity, model choice, features and conversation length. The allowance refreshes every five hours until the weekly limit is reached. Google may change limits during high demand, including restricting compute-heavy features such as Deep Research.

Claude Free also has variable capacity rather than a dependable number of messages. Long conversations and demanding features consume allowance differently.

Microsoft Copilot is a sensible first stop for occasional web questions without registration. Microsoft describes free access as subject to capacity and limits. Its August 2026 app update retired Deep Research, Podcasts and Group Chat, so older feature comparisons can mislead.

Search and alternative chat tools

Perplexity's free plan separates basic search from advanced research. Basic searches are described as practically unlimited; the plan comparison allocates three Pro Searches daily and one Research query monthly. Limited uploads are included.

Mistral's Le Chat is now Mistral Vibe. Conversations, settings and plans carry over. Its free offer covers quick answers, web search and simple tasks; older help documentation also describes daily limits for tools such as uploads and image generation. Mistral does not publish one dependable numeric allowance covering all of them.

Meta AI fits readers who want assistance inside supported Meta products. DeepSeek is another free chat option, with account and regional conditions. Neither publishes a fixed universal daily message number in its consumer documentation. Grok's $0 plan similarly promises limited chat and agent usage, with separate schedules for chat and voice allowances.

Documents, writing and coding have clearer allowances

Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, offers 100 notebooks, each with up to 50 sources. A source can contain up to 500,000 words. The free daily allowance is 50 chat queries and three audio generations. Its document-focused structure makes it my recommendation for students comparing readings or readers questioning a collection of reports.

Grammarly Free includes proofreading, tone viewing and 100 AI generation prompts monthly. Grammarly remains a standalone product within Superhuman; existing Grammarly subscriptions have not all become a different product. Choose Free for correction and occasional drafting, rather than expecting every paid rewriting feature.

GitHub Copilot Free includes 2,000 inline completions and 50 premium requests monthly. Chat interactions count toward the limited request allowance, rather than adding another independent pool of 50. It is an individual offering without the organization controls included in business plans.

Gemini CLI needs a naming correction too. Google's repository says Antigravity CLI replaced it for unpaid-tier and Google One users on June 18, 2026. Antigravity offers $0 individual access, including the CLI, with a capacity-based weekly allowance. Do not treat the old Gemini CLI daily request quota as a current Antigravity entitlement.

Images, design and video: credits are different currencies

Canva Free estimates up to 200 Standard AI uses or 20 Premium AI uses monthly. These draw from a shared allowance: they are alternatives, not two balances to add together. Complex tasks and mixed tools can reduce the number of uses. Free has no Ultra AI access. Some included design features sit outside that allowance and have fair-use conditions.

Adobe's current Firefly guidance gives free users limited daily generations on selected models. It does not promise a fixed universal free-credit number. Choose it to explore Adobe's image tools, but avoid planning a production schedule around an old monthly-credit figure.

Ideogram gives 30 weekly credits only to accounts using Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in. Email-and-password accounts receive no free credits. Credits reset Saturday at 00:00 UTC, and free generations are public. The login restriction matters more than the headline price if you want to avoid another provider's sign-in.

CapCut has no single dependable free AI credit allowance. Its help center describes feature-specific beta limits, with examples ranging from two or three uses to ten. Check the exact feature before building an editing workflow around it. The editor's free access and a renewable Pro trial are different choices.

Free-plan privacy needs a separate decision

Payment-free access does not mean your conversations are excluded from model training. Apply the relevant control before uploading sensitive work:

  • ChatGPT enables consumer data sharing by default. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; Temporary Chat is excluded from training.
  • Gemini activity can be used for model training when Keep Activity is on. Human-reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years.
  • Claude offers a Model Improvement choice. Incognito chats are excluded from improvement, with separate safety-related exceptions.
  • Microsoft Copilot lets signed-in consumers disable conversation training. Voice training has a separate control.
  • Perplexity enables AI data retention by default. Turning it off affects subsequently collected data.
  • Meta may use AI interactions for training. Ordinary private messages with friends and family have different treatment.
  • Mistral Vibe users are not opted out by default. Its training toggle is separate from the API setting.
  • DeepSeek permits training-related use and describes an opt-out right. Grok offers an improvement toggle and Private Chat.
  • Gemini Notebook does not train on personal data unless feedback is submitted. Feedback may expose the interaction context to review.
  • GitHub began using individual Copilot interaction data for training on April 24, 2026, unless users opt out. Antigravity has telemetry controls for sharing interactions.
  • Grammarly's individual Product Improvement and Training setting is on by default. Disable it in privacy settings if needed.
  • Canva ties AI improvement use to privacy preferences. Adobe says it does not train Firefly on personal or generated content.
  • Ideogram's privacy policy permits model-training use, and free output is public. CapCut's policy permits training and improving machine-learning technology using user content.

What to choose for your situation

For occasional everyday help: start with ChatGPT Free. Pick Microsoft Copilot instead when signed-out access matters most. Use Gemini if its Google-account features suit your existing work.

For students and document-heavy readers: choose Gemini Notebook first. Its explicit notebook, source and daily-query limits make it easier to plan reading work than a variable general-chat allowance.

For writers: use Grammarly Free for correction and occasional generated text. Try Claude Free for longer discussions if its phone verification and usage windows are acceptable.

For developers: choose GitHub Copilot Free for a small monthly completion budget. Choose Antigravity for agent-based work, accepting a weekly capacity limit and reviewing telemetry settings.

For visual projects: use Canva for layouts, Firefly for trying Adobe generation, and Ideogram when public output is acceptable. Use CapCut's free features before considering its payment-method-required Pro trial.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT free without a credit card?

Yes. ChatGPT Free is an ongoing free service, rather than a paid subscription trial. OpenAI describes everyday text chats as unlimited subject to abuse safeguards. Uploads, image generation, voice and analysis have their own limits. Consumer training sharing is enabled by default, so review Data Controls before sharing sensitive content.

Can I use Claude Free without a phone number?

New Claude accounts require SMS verification using a number from a supported location. Anthropic says this step cannot be skipped and does not accept VoIP numbers or landlines. A credit card is unnecessary for the Free plan, but payment-free access should not be confused with anonymous registration or registration without a phone.

Does free Gemini need a Google AI subscription?

No. Gemini has access without a paid AI plan, with standard compute-based limits and a 32,000-token context window. Some web features work without signing in; additional features require a Google account. Optional Google AI subscription promotions have separate checkout conditions, including a valid payment method for the student offer.

Which free AI image generator does not need a credit card?

Firefly Free, Canva Free and Ideogram offer free generation without starting a paid trial. Their allowances differ: Firefly describes limited daily generations, Canva uses a shared monthly AI allowance, and Ideogram gives 30 weekly credits through eligible provider sign-in. Ideogram Free generations are public, an important restriction for confidential projects.

Is Gemini CLI still free in October 2026?

Google says Antigravity CLI replaced Gemini CLI for unpaid-tier and Google One users on June 18, 2026. The current Antigravity individual offer includes $0 access and a capacity-based weekly quota. Older Gemini CLI daily request figures should not be treated as the allowance for its successor. Review the current telemetry controls before sharing code.

Which free AI trials can charge me later?

CapCut Pro’s eligible seven-day web trial requires a valid payment method and renews unless cancelled. Google’s student AI subscription offers also require payment details and charge after the promotional period. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 trial requirements vary by offer and region. Ordinary free access is separate from those subscription checkouts.
