Which AI image generator is best for marketing images in 2026?

GPT Image 2.5 is the strongest starting point for marketing teams that need image generation and repeated edits in one workflow. Midjourney, Ideogram and FLUX deserve separate consideration when art direction, lettering or automated production matters more.

Which generator should you shortlist first?

OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare lead the dated Arena text-to-image comparison discussed below. OpenAI recommends Sunburst when editing precision matters most and Flare for faster everyday generation. That makes them sensible first candidates for campaigns that change backgrounds, product placement and copy through several approval rounds.

Choose Midjourney for art-directed concepts, Ideogram for layouts containing prominent words, and FLUX for a production pipeline with explicit image costs. Adobe Firefly deserves priority when procurement requires contractual protection. Canva makes more sense when the finished deliverable is a branded layout containing editable type.

What do the plans and images cost?

Midjourney Basic starts at $10 monthly, while Ideogram Plus costs $20 monthly. Prices below are in US dollars. Subscription allowances and metered API charges measure different things, so treat each row as a separate purchasing model.

Midjourney Pro costs $60 monthly with 30 Fast hours; Mega costs $120 with 60. Annual subscriptions reduce the monthly equivalent by 20%. Standard and higher plans include unlimited Relax image generation. Fast time does not roll over, and additional Fast processing costs $4 an hour.

Ideogram Pro costs $60 monthly for 7,500 credits. Team costs $30 per user monthly for 3,600 credits per user, with a two-user minimum. Annual billing reduces Plus to $15 monthly equivalent, Pro to $42 and Team to $20 per user. The discontinued Basic tier remains a legacy subscription rather than a new purchase option.

Ideogram's free allowance is 30 credits weekly for qualifying social-login accounts. Paid credits do not translate into a fixed image count: model, size, quality and tools change consumption. Eligible paid generations can continue in a slower queue after credits run out, while editing and reference workflows can still require credits.

Midjourney versus Ideogram for brand creative

Midjourney V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Advice centered on V7's Omni Reference needs updating: the V8.2 documentation describes an Edit Model that replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture. Midjourney's Style Reference controls remain relevant when choosing a visual treatment rather than copying a subject.

Midjourney is my concept-first choice for a campaign whose visual direction is still being decided. Keep exact logos and final advertising copy in the layout stage. Its version documentation describes native 2K HD generation for V8.1; do not assume every editing operation preserves the same dimensions. Inspect the exported file before booking a print placement.

Ideogram's current model documentation includes 4.5 and 4.0, alongside 3.0. Version 4.5 accepts up to five reference images for workflows such as recurring characters and product consistency. Versions 4.0 and 4.5 offer 1K and 2K generation. Some transparent-image workflows offer larger upscaled exports, which should be distinguished from native generation.

For a promotion containing a short headline, Ideogram belongs near the top of the shortlist. Its text guidance recommends quoting the exact wording and keeping text short. English works best; accented and non-Latin text needs particular scrutiny.

Privacy can change the purchase decision. Midjourney requires Pro or Mega for Stealth mode, while Ideogram Plus and higher keep new images private until published.

OpenAI: ChatGPT convenience or API control

GPT Image 2.5 is the current API family to evaluate, with Sunburst and Flare variants. ChatGPT Images 2.5 arrived in September 2026, and the DALL·E GPT was retired on August 30, 2026.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly and includes image generation. API usage is billed separately. Buy the subscription for interactive creative work; use the API when an application needs repeatable requests, measured usage and integration with an approval process. Avoid budgeting around a fixed daily ChatGPT image allowance because access and limits can change.

Both GPT Image 2.5 variants charge $5 per million text incoming tokens, $8 per million image incoming tokens and $30 per million image output tokens. Equal token rates do not guarantee equal image costs. Quality settings and model behavior change token consumption; the Responses API can also add the main conversational model's charges.

For a concrete low-cost reference, GPT Image 1 mini lists a low-quality 1024 × 1024 output at $0.005, medium at $0.011 and high at $0.036, before applicable incoming charges. Those prices describe the smaller model, not GPT Image 2.5.

The 2.5 models support custom dimensions up to 3,840 pixels on either edge and 8,294,400 total pixels. Dimensions must be multiples of 16, with aspect ratios between 1:3 and 3:1. OpenAI calls resolutions above 2560 × 1440 experimental. Transparent PNG or WebP output is useful for placing generated objects into a separately controlled advertisement.

FLUX and Google's current image options

FLUX 3 Image is Black Forest Labs' newer image offering, beyond the FLUX.2 family. It supports up to ten reference images and bounding boxes for positioning elements. That combination is relevant to product composites where the brief specifies both the object and its location.

Use Black Forest Labs' Playground for interactive work or its API for integration. FLUX 3 Image Klein charges $0.008 at 768 × 768, $0.009 at 1K, $0.014 at 2K and $0.036 at 4K. Text-to-image and editing have the same listed Klein prices. The larger FLUX 3 Image model uses separate resolution-based pricing; do not apply Klein's rates to it.

Self-hosted FLUX needs a separate licensing decision. Open weights alone should never be treated as permission for every commercial deployment. Match the license to internal marketing, client services or a customer-facing application before building around it.

Google's current efficient option is Nano Banana 2.1. The standard Gemini API lists approximately $0.0336 for a 1K output, $0.0504 for 2K and $0.113 for 4K, plus incoming charges. Nano Banana Pro costs approximately $0.134 for 1K or 2K and $0.24 for 4K output. Batch processing has separate lower rates.

Nano Banana names refer to Gemini-native image models. Google's Imagen documentation says Imagen models have shut down in the Gemini API. Do not build a new Gemini API workflow around an old Imagen 4 price table. Gemini app access and API billing are separate purchasing choices.

The following editorial scores describe suitability for a marketing shortlist, from 1 to 5. They are judgments about documented capabilities, not measured benchmark results. Resolution is listed separately because more pixels do not prove better lettering or brand fidelity.

ProductTypography scoreBrand consistency scoreResolution option
GPT Image 2.555Up to 8.29 megapixels
Midjourney34Native 2K in V8.1 HD
Ideogram 4.5541K or 2K
FLUX 3 Image45Up to about 16 megapixels
Nano Banana 2.144Up to 4K
Adobe Firefly34Model-dependent
Canva55Workflow-dependent

Canva's typography score assumes editable layout text, rather than asking a generator to paint the final headline. Its brand score likewise reflects Brand Kit and layout controls. Compare the finished workflow with a raw image generator on that basis.

Commercial permission and IP indemnification are separate checks. Midjourney requires companies exceeding $1 million in annual gross revenue to use Pro or Mega. Ideogram permits commercial use subject to its terms. For FLUX, distinguish hosted generation from the license governing downloaded weights.

Adobe says Firefly training uses licensed and public-domain content. Qualifying enterprise contracts offer indemnification for selected workflows; that protection should never be assumed for every partner model inside Firefly. OpenAI and Google also offer conditional protection under eligible business arrangements. Canva Shield's AI indemnification is for eligible Enterprise customers. Treat indemnification as contract-specific across all seven options, and request the covered-model list and exclusions before purchase.

What the public leaderboard can tell you

Arena's October 7, 2026 text-to-image snapshot ranks GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst first at 1425 points and Flare second at 1398. Nano Banana 2.1 is sixth at 1328, marked preliminary. These are dated preference results, rather than a universal ranking of marketing usefulness.

The table does not measure your product's label accuracy, adherence to an approved color palette or legal protection. Use it to select trial candidates, then compare identical briefs. Keep an exact-copy check and a reference-image check separate from the preference judgment. A visually preferred image can still fail approval when the packaging changes between variants.

Which should each buyer choose?

For a small marketing team, start with ChatGPT Plus for interactive revisions or Ideogram Plus for headline-heavy graphics. Both cost $20 monthly, but their allowances and editing workflows differ.

For an art director, shortlist Midjourney Standard for concept development. Choose Pro when Stealth mode or the revenue rule requires it.

For an ecommerce developer, compare GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst with FLUX 3 Image on repeated product edits. Price the complete request sequence, including reference processing and rejected outputs.

For a Gemini-centered team, evaluate Nano Banana 2.1 first and reserve Pro for assignments that merit its higher output cost.

For an agency facing procurement review, request Firefly's eligible enterprise protection in writing. Its paid plans include unlimited standard image and vector generation, while premium features consume credits. Standard includes 2,000 monthly premium credits, Pro 4,000, Pro Plus 10,000 and Premium 50,000. Credits reset monthly without rollover.

For a team publishing branded social layouts, choose Canva Business when its collaboration tools fit the assignment. Its pooled AI allowance is shared across feature tiers, so budget generated media separately from ordinary layout work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Midjourney or ChatGPT better for marketing images?

Choose ChatGPT when an assignment depends on conversational revisions to an existing image. OpenAI recommends GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst for editing precision. Choose Midjourney when visual concept development is the main assignment. Midjourney Standard costs $30 monthly; ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly. Confidential work also needs attention to privacy settings, including Midjourney Stealth eligibility.

Which AI image generator is best for text in advertisements?

Ideogram is a strong candidate for short headlines inside generated images, while GPT Image 2.5 also belongs on the shortlist. Ideogram recommends exact wording in quotation marks and shorter text. For a final advertisement requiring a specific brand font, create the picture separately and add editable lettering in a layout tool such as Canva.

How much does the OpenAI image generation API cost per image?

There is no single GPT Image 2.5 price per image. Sunburst and Flare charge $30 per million image output tokens, with separate incoming token charges. Dimensions and quality affect usage. For comparison, GPT Image 1 mini lists a 1024 × 1024 image at $0.005 low quality, $0.011 medium or $0.036 high, before applicable incoming charges.

Can AI-generated marketing images be used commercially?

Commercial use depends on the product terms, account and rights to reference assets. Midjourney requires companies above $1 million in annual gross revenue to subscribe to Pro or Mega. Downloadable FLUX weights have licenses distinct from hosted services. Permission to publish an output does not itself include a promise to defend an infringement claim.

Is Google Imagen still the model to choose in Gemini?

Google now directs Gemini image development toward its native image models, including Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana Pro. Its documentation says Imagen models have shut down in the Gemini API. Nano Banana 2.1 lists approximately $0.0336 for 1K output and $0.113 for 4K output, with incoming processing billed separately.

Does Adobe Firefly include copyright indemnification?

Adobe offers contractual IP indemnification for qualifying enterprise entitlements and selected Firefly workflows. Eligibility and exclusions matter, including which model generated the image. A Firefly subscription should not be treated as blanket protection for every output or partner model. Ask for the covered services and contract terms before using indemnification as the reason to purchase.
